Exterior Rear-view Mirror, Wind Noise

Condition
Wind noise heard near A-Pillar.
May be caused by a gap between the door mirror mount and housing.
Production
Installation of adhesive backed felt sealing washer as of Oct. 1998 beginning with VIN: 8D_XA030000.
Service
Verify condition by applying tape around door mirror and mirror housing, then road test for wind noise.
If wind noise is still noticeable:
- Remove tape, further diagnosis is necessary, the following procedure WILL NOT apply.
If no wind noise is heard:
- Remove tape.
- Cut a 40 mm strip from adhesive backed felt washer Part No: 8D0 857 555 (allows felt washer to slip past mirror wiring harness).
Note:
Illustration shows washer (felt side up, adhesive side down).
^ Cut at -A- for left mirror.
^ Cut at -B- for right mirror.
^ Flat edge of felt washer -arrow- faces away from vehicle.
- Fold door mirror towards body.
- Clean surface behind mirror (area where felt washer will be installed).
- Tilt mirror towards the rear.
- Remove backing from felt washer and slide felt washer below mirror housing, then press into place (flat edge of gasket -arrow- to the outside as shown).
Note:
In extreme cases it may be necessary to disassemble mirror housing from mirror mount (see Repair Manual Body Exterior Group 66) and install adhesive backed felt washer Part No: 8D0 857 555 (without cutting washer).
- Road test vehicle to ensure wind noise is eliminated.
