Removing and installing backrest cover and padding for 1/3 backrest section

Removing







- Remove backrest.
- Remove bolts - 2 - (2x) in lock trim - 3 -.
- Remove head restraint - 4 - by pressing catch on left head restraint guide - 6 -.
- Remove head restraint guide - 6 - Fig. 2.
- Pry fastening strip - 10 - out of backrest panel - 5 -.
- Use screwdriver to pry fastening strip - 11 - out of fastening groove - 12 -.







- Cut through upholstery clips - 7 - and remove seat cover.
- Remove backrest heating element - 8 -.

Installing
- Use VAG 1634 stapling tool to install new upholstery clips.
- When installing a new backrest panel, bend retaining tabs - 13 - inward approx. 1-2 mm to provide better support for fastening strip.

1 - Locking lever
- Remove bolts - 2 - (2x) in lock trim - 3 -.
- Detach locking lever from underneath at engaging hooks (2x).
- Use screwdriver to pry out locking lever at top.

4 - Head restraint
The outer rear head restraints are not identical to the front head restraints. Mark accordingly with adhesive tape if all head restraints are removed together.

- When backrest is locked in position, pin protrudes 1-2 mm above lock trim.
- When backrest is not locked, pin protrudes approx. 20 mm above lock trim and red mark is visible.

14 - Lock cylinder
- Removing and installing lock cylinder involves use of ignition key.
- Remove locking lever.
- Use screwdriver to pry out retaining tabs and at the same time press out lock cylinder - 14 -.
