Output Diagnostic Test Mode (scan tool function 03)

Instrument cluster


NOTE:
- The output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) may only be carded out on a stationary vehicle with the engine not running.
- If a malfunction is found during the output diagnostic test mode, trace the cause and replace the instrument cluster if necessary.


Test sequence
With the output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) all the control elements in the instrument cluster (if installed and coded) are activated in sequence.
- Simultaneous activation of all analog instruments (coolant temperature gauge, tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge)
- Activation of seat belt warning lamp
- Activation of buzzer (chime)
- Segment test of driver information display and/or LCD display for odometer
- Test of instrument panel lighting, including dimmer function
- Coolant excess temperature test


NOTE:
- The instrument panel lighting test can only be conducted with illumination switched on.
- Coolant excess temperature test activates the A/C compressor shut-off


Initiating output DTM
- Press buttons -0- and -3- to select "Output Diagnostic Test Mode" function 03.

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

This will start the output DTM for the analog instruments (displays)

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Analog Indicator



The following tests are carried out simultaneously when the -Q- button is pressed:
- Coolant temperature gauge needle moves across the full range of the scale.
- Tachometer needle moves across the full range of the scale.
- Speedometer needle moves across the full range of the scale.
- Fuel gauge needle moves across the full range of the scale.

When the gauge needles have finished moving across the scales the following fixed vales will be indicated:
Coolant temperature gauge: 90 °C (194 °F)
Tachometer: 3000 RPM
Speedometer: 100 km/h (63 mph)
Fuel gauge: 1/2


NOTE:A gauge needle sweep which has been started will be interrupted each time the ignition is switched off and on.


- Press -> button.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Seat Belt Warning Light K19



The seat belt warning light will be activated.


NOTE: The seat belt warning light is activated using the control module coding, depending on the system design and the equipment installed. Therefore if this control element is not tested, the warning light is not active.


- Press -> button.

Buzzer chime



The buzzer (chime) will be activated and will sound continuously.

- Press -> button.

Segment test



NOTE:
- All the display segments on the driver information display and/or the LCD display for the odometer will be activated.
- All the display segments on the driver information display will light up and one line will remain dark.


- Press -> button.

Switch and instrument lighting



The dimming of instrument panel lighting is tested.


NOTE: The instrument panel lighting test can only be conducted with the illumination switched on.


- Press -> button.

Coolant excess temperature test



The safety shut-off for the A/C compressor will be activated after about 5 seconds.

- Press -> button.

- Press button to terminate output DTM.

This returns the scan tool to the "Select function XX" prompt.
