Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks
VAG1551 scan tool, connecting and selecting address word
Note: You can also use VAG Vehicle System Tester 1552 or VAS5051 Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System instead of the VAG1551 scan tool. The VAG1552 Vehicle System Tester does not provide you with the facility for priming out information, however.
Please note the test preconditions for the particular systems.
^ With the ignition on, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC) using connecting cable VAG1551/3. The Data Link Connector (DLC) is located on the left on the underside of the dashboard.

Notes:
^ The connections on the Data Link Connector (DLC) must be checked if there is no indication in the display.
^ The PRINT button is used for activation for the printer. Illumination of the control light in the PRINT button indicates that the printer is activated.
^ You can print out additional operating help, depending on the program, using the HELP button on the VAG1551.
^ Switch the ignition on.
^ Press the PRINT button on the scan tool, thus switching the printer on.
^ Press Button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" mode.

Notes: By entering the address word you select the control module with which the scan tool is to exchange data. The address word consists of two figures and is stated in the respective topics.
For example: By pressing button 34, you enter the address word "Self leveling suspension system".

^ Confirm the entry using the Q button.

Note: One of the following four messages will appear in the display if a problem occurs in setting-up of communication between the scan tool and the control module:
^ Print out a list of Possible causes by pressing the HELP button.
^ Check the connections on diagnosis cable "K".
^ Check power supply and Ground (GND) connection to control module - J197.

^ Repair problem.
^ After eliminating possible causes of the problem enter address word 03 for brake electronics again and confirm using the Q button.
Provided setting-up of communication between the scan tool and the control module is accomplished without any problems, the control module identification (X), system designation (Y), hardware and software version (Z), code (V) and workshop code (W) are shown on the display.
Notes:
^ The button is used in each case to move one step further in the program.
^ The individual vehicle systems to be checked are discussed in more detail in the respective topics.
^ The control module index can be hanged only by replacing the control module.

^ The diagnosis cable must be checked if the control module identification number does not appear.
