- Cylinder head installed
- Remove ribbed belt.
- Remove toothed belt.
- Remove camshafts.
- Remove hydraulic valve lifters and place them down with contact surface downward. When doing this make sure that valve lifters are not interchanged.
- Remove spark plugs.
- Set piston of appropriate cylinder to bottom dead center.

Note: Tight valve keepers can be released by tapping lightly on the valve lever.

Exhaust side

Note: Before attaching the adjustable rod, remove the two studs in the center of the cylinder head and the three upper studs (intake side) for mounting the cylinder head cover.

- Screw (hand-tight) VW653/3 pressure hose together with seal into spark plug hole of relevant cylinder, and maintain constant pressure of at least 6 bar (87 psi).

- Attach 2036 adjustable rod using M6 x 40 bolts with large washers.
- Remove valve spring using VW541/1 or VW541/1 A lever and VW541/5 valve spring tensioner.
- Remove valve spring and valve spring plate.

- To prevent damage to new valve stem seals, place plastic sleeve -A- on valve stem.
- Lightly lubricate sealing lip with oil.
- Install valve stem seal -B- (without oiling outside of seal) into 3129 seal driver and carefully push it down over valve stem and up to valve guide.
- When installing new valve, lightly oil valve stem before installing.

Intake side

Note: The intake valves are installed in the cylinder head at different angles.

3362 valve spring tool can be set accordingly in two different positions:
1 - Upper position for center valve
2 - Lower position for two outer valves
3 - Threaded holes on each side to take M6 x 25 bolts for mounting spring compressor to cylinder head.

- Mount 3362 valve spring tool on cylinder head using two bolts supplied.
- Screw (hand-tight) VW653/3 pressure hose with seal into spark plug thread of relevant cylinder and maintain constant pressure of at least 6 bar (87 psi).
- Set position of spring compressor for relevant valve, and remove valve spring using threaded spindle.

- Remove valve stem seal using 3364 puller for valve shaft seal.

- To prevent damage to new valve stem seals, place plastic sleeve -A- on valve stem.
- Lightly lubricate sealing lip with oil.
- Install valve stem seal -B- (without oiling outside of seal) into 3365 valve stem seal fitting tool and carefully push it down over valve stem and up to valve guide.
- When installing new valve, lightly oil valve stem before installing.
