Recommended Sequence of Adjustment

RING GEAR AND PINION, RECOMMENDED SEQUENCE OF ADJUSTMENT
If the pinion and ring gear have to be adjusted, it is important to comply with the following sequence in the interest of a streamlined work process.
^ Determine total shim thickness "S total" (S3) to give specified pre-load on pinion tapered roller bearings.
^ Determine total shim thickness "S total" (S1 plus S2) to give specified pre-load on differential tapered roller bearings.
^ Distribute total shim thickness "S total" (S1 plus S2), such that specified backlash between ring gear and pinion is obtained.
The goal of the adjustment is to achieve the position of quietest operation that was determined on the test machine in production.
The greatest possible care and cleanliness during all installation work and measuring procedures are absolutely necessary for a satisfactory result.
