Oil Pressure Sender: Testing and Inspection
Oil pressure switches and oil pressure, checking
Visual (warning light) and audible (warning buzzer) low oil pressure indicators in instrument cluster.
Checking oil pressure switch is only necessary if there is an oil pressure warning.
Requirements
^ Oil level OK
^ Oil pressure warning light -K3- must light up when ignition is switched ON
^ For vehicles with Auto-Check system, the display must light up (advance through the displays)
^ Engine oil temperature approximately 80°C (176°F), radiator coolant fan must have switched on at least once
Checking oil pressure switch
- Disconnect wire from 0.3 bar oil pressure switch (brown insulation).
- Remove oil pressure switch and install oil pressure tester VAG 1342.
- Connect cable -2- (brown) to Ground (GND).
- Connect cable -1- (blue) to oil pressure switch.
- Clamp VAG 1527B LED voltage tester to cable -1. and Battery Positive Voltage (B+).
- Start engine and check oil pressure while slowly increasing engine speed (RPM).
Notes:
^ The 0. 3 bar oil pressure switch (brown insulation) switch opens between 0.15 and 0.45 bar (2-6.5 psi).
^ The 1. 8 bar oil pressure switch (white insulation) switch closes between 1.6 and 2.0 bar (23-29 psi).
Checking oil pressure
^ Minimum engine oil temperature: 80°C (176°F)
- Remove oil pressure switch and install oil pressure tester VAG 1342.
- Screw in oil pressure switch into VAG 1342.
- Start engine.
Note: If oil pressure is extremely high (possibly caused by a jammed or incorrectly installed pressure relief valve ), too much pressure is supplied to the hydraulic valve lifters. This can cause the engine to stall shortly after starting. When a further attempt is made to start the engine, it cranks at a speed that is noticeably faster than normal due to a lack of compression.
Engine oil
Engine oil capacity (w/filter)- 7.5 L (8.0 qt.).
The engine oil is factory filled with a special quality multi-grade oil which can be used as an all-season oil, except in extremely cold climates.
The specifications stated in this information must be indicated on the container, either individually or in combination with other specifications.
Mixing oils when topping up is permissible.
Select the viscosity classification according to the chart shown. The oil does not need to be changed if the outside temperature only briefly exceeds the specified range.

1) Must be accompanied by a date of 10.91 or later.
2) These oils may only be used in exceptional cases if no approved engine oil is available.
