Airbag System

WARNING!
- Airbag components must only be checked, removed, installed and/or repaired by qualified Service Department personnel.
- NEVER conduct tests with a test light or multimeter.
- Airbag system must only be tested when installed in the vehicle, using the VAG1551 scan tool. This does not apply to the spiral spring testing.
- Airbag system components must not be opened, disassembled or repaired. Always use new parts.
- Before starting work on any part of the airbag system, disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap. When reconnecting the Ground strap, the passenger compartment must NOT be occupied.
- No objects of ant kind maybe placed in a position to cover up the airbag flap on the front passenger side.
- NEVER attempt to open the airbag flap by force.
- Replace the complete instrument panel if the airbag flap is damaged.


CAUTION!
- Airbag units have an expiration date (sticker on the left B-pillar). If airbag units are replaced, pull the sticker with expiration date off the new airbag and place it over the old sticker. Airbag unit and sticker must be replaced after 15 years.
- DO NOT install an airbag unit or triggering unit that has been dropped from a height of more than 20 inches.
- Always replace any airbag system parts that have experienced mechanical damage (dents, cracks).
- Airbag units must be installed immediately after being taken out of stock If the work is interrupted during the installation, do not leave the airbag unit unattended.
- After removing from the vehicle, ALWAYS lay the airbag unit down with padded or open side facing upward.
- Airbag units must not be treated with grease, cleaners or similar materials, and must not be exposed to temperatures above 100 °C(212 °F), even for short periods.


CAUTION!
If the airbag system has been deployed as the result of a collision, ALWAYS replace the following components:
- Driver-side airbag unit
- Passenger-side airbag unit
- Airbag control module with holder
- Airbag spiral spring
- Driver's seat belt
- Front passenger seat belt


CAUTION!
- Storage, transportation and disposal of airbag units are subject to laws for flammable solids.
- Active airbag units (gas generators): carefully remove active (not deployed) airbag units from the vehicle and return to the Warranty Parts Test Center for pro per disposal DO NOT deploy the airbag in the vehicle.
- Deployed airbag units (gas generators): deployed airbag units DO NOT have to be disposed of as hazardous waste, but can be discarded in a normal manner It is, however, recommended that deployed airbag units be recycled
- Airbag control modules which have a red part identification label do not contain a mercury switch and can be discarded in normal manner. Airbag control modules which DO NOT have a red part identification label contain a mercury switch and must be disposed of following laws governing hazardous waste disposal
- Airbag units must not be stored for longer than 3 months.
