Adjustment Overview

General Information
Careful adjustment of the pinion and ring gear is essential for the service life and quiet operation of the final drive. For this reason, pinions and ring gears are paired during manufacturing and inspected in both directions of rotation on special test machines for good positioning of the bearing pattern and lack of noise. The position of quietest operation is determined by sliding the pinion in an axial direction, while the ring gear is lifted continuously out of zero-play engagement until the torsional backlash is within the specified tolerance.

The deviation "r," related to the adjustment master "Ro," is measured for the ring gear and pinion sets supplied as replacement parts and inscribed on the outer circumference of the ring gear. The ring gear and pinion must only be replaced together as a set.

Adjustment And Inscription Of Ring Gear And Pinion Sets
Replacement ring gear and pinion sets:
1 - Identification "0937" indicates Oerlikon ring gear and pinion set with ratio 37 : 9

2 - Mating number (312) of ring gear and pinion set

3 - Dimension "r"
Related to value from adjusting gauge of special testing machine used in production
Always specified in 1/100 mm
Example: "25" indicates r = 0.25 mm

Ro - Length of adjusting gauge used on special test machine
"Ro" = 57.50 mm

R - Actual dimension between ring gear axis and face side of pinion at point of quietest operation for this ring gear and pinion set R = Ro + r

Vo - Hypoid displacement
