Headliner - Stained

Group: 60

Number: 01-01

Date: June 7, 2001

Subject:
Headliner, Stained

Model(s):
A8, A8L, S8 All

Condition

- Water leaks and stains headliner near A-pillar (arrows) and C-pillar trim.

This may be caused by pinched, kinked, restricted, incorrectly-routed, or disconnected sunroof drain hoses. Any of these conditions could cause insufficient water drainage, forcing water to back up, and resulting in a leak.

Service

- Disassemble headliner and A- and D-pillar trim to access sunroof drain hoses. See Repair Manual, Repair Group 70, Interior Trim for detailed information.

WARNING!
Observe safety regulations when performing work on or near airbags (see Repair Group 69 in Repair Manual).

- Water-test roof and check for leakage into vehicle interior around sunroof drain attachments.

Note:
^ Water may overflow from catch trays due to drain hose restriction.

^ Expansion foam in A- and D-pillars can change the drain hose cross-section from a round to an elliptical shape, restricting drainage.

^ The rear hose can become pinched by the rear bumper.

- Check drain hose at sunroof connecting point (arrows) to ensure that tube is not kinked.

- Inspect front drain hoses to ensure proper routing. without pinching or kinking.

- Ensure that drain tube check valves are free of wax and/or debris.

Note:
Never trim, modify or remove drain hose check valves, as this will prevent water from draining properly.

- Check all anchor points to ensure that hose is not partially disconnected.

- Verify that rear drain hose routing (arrows indicate incorrect routing) maintains a level or downward track.

Note:
If the drain tube is positioned higher than the frame, water will back up in catch tray, causing a leak.

- Check condition of drain tubes, and replace with Part No. 4A9 877 233 (front or rear) if any deformation is found.

CAUTION!
Part numbers are far reference only. Always check with your Parts Dept. for the latest parts information.

- Repeat water test before re-installing interior trim.

Note:
It is normal for same water to leak around sunroof seal during water test.

- Clean interior trim. See Technical Bulletin Group 70. Number 00-01 dated Aug. 23, 2000 for detailed cleaning instructions

- If interior trim cannot be cleaned, replace as necessary.

- Re-install headliner in reverse order of removal. See Repair Manual, Repair Group 70, Interior Trim.
