Removal






NOTE: During removal procedures, refer to the component location illustration above and component notes below.

Component Notes And Information

1 Bolt, tighten to: 10 Nm (89 in. lb)
2 Fuel Rail
3 Bolt, tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
4 Nut, tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
5 Two Stage Intake Manifold
6 Nut, tighten to: 10 Nm (89 in. lb)
7 Cylinder Head BoltsCylinder head bolts
- Always replace
- Loosen in reverse order of tightening sequence
8 Cylinder Head
- Checking for distortion, refer to Testing and Inspection. Testing and Inspection
- Refacing dimension, refer to Resurface
9 Bolt, tighten to: 10 Nm (89 in. lb)
10 Bolt, tighten to: 10 Nm (89 in. lb)
11 Bolt, tighten to: 55 Nm (41 ft lb)
- Use holder 3036
12 Cylinder Head Gasket
- Identification lettering must face upward

Procedure

NOTE:
^ With engine installed.
^ The battery is located in the luggage compartment, right side, under the cover.
^ All cable ties that are loosened or removed in order to remove the engine must be replaced or reinstalled to the same place when the engine is reinstalled.
^ Seals and sealing rings should always be replaced.

CAUTION: Before disconnecting the battery, determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.

1. Disconnect the battery ground strap.





2. Remove noise insulation panel.
3. Remove intake air grille in bumper.





4. Attach drain hose, approx. 12 mm (1/2 in.) inside diameter, to drain fitting at bottom left of radiator.
5. Remove ribbed drive belt.
6. Remove camshaft timing belt.





7. Disconnect vacuum line to brake booster unit.
8. Disconnect vacuum line at cruise control control module.
9. Disconnect accelerator pedal cable.
10. Disconnect coolant lines to heater core (supply and return to vent valves).





11. Disconnect left and right knock sensor connectors at fuel rail and remove cable ties (4 places).
12. Disconnect fuel injector harness connectors.
13. Unbolt fuel rail, carefully remove along with fuel injectors, and place down to one side.





14. Remove intake manifold and lift out.
15. Disconnect ignition coil harness connectors.
16. Disconnect front exhaust pipe at top connection to exhaust manifold.
17. Disconnect coolant line at rear between cylinder heads and remove.





18. Remove cylinder head cover.
- Only when removing left cylinder head:
19. Unbolt oil dipstick guide tube and remove.




Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:





20. Loosen cylinder head bolts (arrows), following reverse order of tightening sequence shown in the illustration


21. Remove cylinder head.
