Disassembly and Assembly

Disassembly

NOTE: Engine removed.





1. Remove right engine support.
2. Lower engine with transmission to work surface and continue to support weight with crane.

NOTE: Place a suitable supports under engine and transmission as an aid in separating engine from transmission.

3. Disconnect ground wires from engine (2 places).





4. Remove starter brackets (2 places).
5. Remove starter, electrical wiring remains connected.





6. Remove generator, electrical wiring remains connected.





7. Disconnect harness connectors -1- through -4-.
8. Remove bracket.
9. Remove cable clip on left engine support.
10. Disconnect wiring harness.





11. Remove A/C compressor and hydraulic pump bracket.
12. Remove left engine support.

Note: Before disconnecting the torque converter from the drive plate, mark the alignment of both parts to each other.





13. Disconnect torque converter from drive plate (3 bolts).
14. Disconnect transmission from engine.





15. For disassembly and assembly, attach engine to stand with holding fixtures tools No. VW 540 and VW 540/1 or equivalents.

Assembly
Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, noting the following information.
Ensure drive plate matchmarks are aligned.
Tighten torque converter drive plate (3 bolts) to: 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
