Instrument Panel, Removing And Installing

Removing

- Cover driver and passenger seat with covers.
- Switch ignition on.
- For vehicles with power adjusted seats, move seat to rear position before disconnecting the battery.
- Place steering wheel all the way back.
- Place lid for instrument panel outlet windshield to "Close." For vehicles with air conditioning, press "Def."
- For vehicles with coded radio unit/radio-navigation system (RNS) note coding; ask if necessary.
- Disconnect battery ground strap with ignition off.

CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-off the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting the vehicle battery. Switch-on the emergency (back-up) battery after reconnecting the vehicle battery.

- Remove storage shelf, driver side.
- Remove floor outlet at driver foot space.
- Disconnect connector for foot space illumination and remove foot outlet.
- Remove glove box.
- Remove sill plates, interior.
- Remove center console.
- Removing steering wheel.







- Press in outer cover (arrows) and remove.







- Remove two screws.
- Pull instrument cluster insert out of instrument panel.
- Separate tie wrap at backside of instrument cluster insert.
- Loosen security straps for connectors and remove connectors.
- Remove trim for steering column switch.


Vehicles 07.97 >:
- Remove return ring with collector ring.







- Remove bolts - 2 -.

All:
- Place steering column switch - 4 - with connected wires to side.
- Loosen clamping bolt - 3 - and remove steering column switch left - 1 - from steering column.
Lines remain connected.







- Remove two bolts - 1 - with washers - 2 - (2.5 Nm/22 in.lb.).
- Remove cover - 3 -.

Vehicles with automatic transmission:
- Remove bracket (steel wire bracket) of cable for selector lever lock.

All:







- Remove steering column from support for instrument panel (bolts - 1 -) and place in foot outlet.
- Do not pull steering column apart.

NOTE: Do not loosen nut - 2 -.

- Remove control module for ABS/EDS from support for instrument panel.
- Where available, unhook auxiliary relay at support for instrument panel.







- Remove support - 2 - between support for instrument panel and transmission tunnel (screws - 1 - and - 3 -).

Vehicles with manual adjustable automatic vertical aim control system:
- Remove connector at switch for automatic vertical aim control system.
- Remove passenger airbag unit.
- Disconnect connector for louver illumination.

Installation location: A-pillar passenger side above the support.







- Remove screws - 1 - at bracket - 2 - at pedal bracket.







- Remove instrument panel left and right at A-pillar (4 screws - 1 -).







- Press off air tube left and right from air distribution connector housing.
- Pull instrument panel to back and remove.
- 2. Installer required.

Installing
- Place instrument panel in vehicle in installed position.







- Set height of instrument panel before bolting by placing spacers - 2 -.
- To adjust, outlets - 4 - must be removed.
- Instrument panel must connect at a height of door trim.
- After adjusting support for instrument panel - 4 - , tighten bolts - 1 - and mounting point of nuts - 3 - securely.

Tightening torque: 45 Nm (33 ft.lb.)







- Loosen bolts - 3 - for tension free installation of support - 2 -.
- Tighten screws - 1 - with 22 Nm (16 ft.lb.)
- Tighten screws - 3 - with 10 Nm (7 ft.lb.).

Further installation occurs in reverse order of removal.
