ATF Level, Checking and Filling
The ATF level -3- is correct if, at an ATF temperature of 30 - 45°C (86 - 113°F) 1), there is still a slight escape of fluid through the filler plug hole -2- (the oil rises when it is heated).
1) For hot regions: 50°C (122°F)
Test requirements
^ Transmission not in "mechanical backup" mode
^ ATF temperature no higher than 40°C (104°F) at start of testing
^ Selector lever in "P" position
^ Engine running at idle (closed throttle position)
^ A/C and heat off
^ Vehicle standing on level ground
Notes:
^ Only ATF with the designation ESSO L T 71141 (color. clear-yellow) can be added.
^ Containers available: G052 162 A2 (1.0 liter)
^ Additives cannot be used.
^ Checking the ATF level when the temperature is too low will lead to overfilling.
^ Checking the ATF level when the temperature is too high will lead to underfilling.
^ Overfilling or under-filling the ATF impairs the function of the transmission.
CAUTION! Always wear safety glasses.
^ Hang filled ATF reservoir VAG 1924 as high as possible on vehicle (e.g. on radiator grill).
^ Put selector lever in "P" position and run engine at idle (closed throttle position).
^ Place pan under transmission oil pan to catch oil.
The ATF temperature is measured using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) as follows:
^ Connect VAG1 551 scan tool.
^ Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transmission" operating mode 1 -
^ Press buttons -0- and -2- to insert "Transmission Electronics" address word 02.
^ Press -Q- button to confirm input.
^ Press (arrow) button.
^ Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08.
^ Press -Q- button to confirm input.
^ Press buttons -0-, -0- and -4- to input display group number 004.
^ Press -Q- button to confirm input.
^ Indicated on display. The ATF temperature is indicated (in C°) in display field 1.
^ Unscrew ATF filler plug -2-.
The ATF level is OK if:
There is a slight escape of fluid through the filler plug hole -2- at an ATF temperature of 30 - 45°C. 1)
1) For hot regions: 50° C
^ Install ATF filler plug -2-.
Tightening torque: 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.)
Notes:
^ The ATF filler plug must be closed (at the latest), when the fluid reaches a temperature of 45°C (for hot countries 50°C).
^ Always replace the O-ring for the ATF filler plug.
ATF must be added if:
ATF does not escape through the hole for the ATF filler plug -2-, even though the correct ATF temperature (approximately 40°C) has been reached.
^ Add ATF using filler nozzle from VAG 1924, until excess ATF escapes through hole for ATF filler plug -2-.
Note: The filler nozzle must be introduced into one of the openings of the oil scraper cap -4-, which is installed above the filler hole.
CAUTION! Do not push the filler nozzle to the top. Otherwise, the oil cap could spring off.
^ Install ATF filler plug -2-.
Tightening torque: 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.)
^ Press (arrow) button.
^ Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06.
^ Press -Q- button to confirm input.
