ATF, Changing, Topping Off After Repair
Draining ATF
^ Place pan under transmission oil pan to catch oil.
^ Open drain plug -1- and drain ATF.
CAUTION!
^ Dispose of used ATF properly.
^ If there is no ATF in the transmission, the engine must not be started and the vehicle must not be towed.
Filling ATF
Notes:
^ When filling is started, the ATF temperature must not be higher than 30°C.
^ Always replace the 0-ring for the ATF filler plug.
^ Install ATF drain plug -1,
^ Tightening torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
^ Remove ATF filler plug -2,
^ Add ATF using filler nozzle from VAG 1924, until excess ATF escapes through hole for ATF filler plug -2-.
Note: The filler nozzle must be introduced into one of the openings of the oil scraper cap (item -4-, illus. A37-0084) which is installed above the filler hole.
CAUTION! Do not push the filler nozzle to the top. Otherwise, the oil cap could spring off.
^ Put selector lever in "P" position and run engine at idle (closed throttle position).
^ Add ATF until excess escapes through hole for ATF filler plug -2-.
^ With brake pedal pushed down and engine at idle, move selector lever through all positions (P, R, N, D, 4, 3, 2). Hold selector lever in each position for approximately 10 seconds.
^ Check ATF level and top off.
Notes:
^ All of the test requirements and notes must be complied with.
^ If it is necessary to adjust the ATF level, let the ATF cool to 30°C.
