Fuel Level Signal: Testing and Inspection

Fuel Level Status, Checking

NOTE:
- If little fuel remains in the fuel tank, less than approx. 12 liters (3 gallons), misfiring and fuel system malfunctions can result. Also, the malfunction "Fuel Level too Low" (SAE P1250/VAG17658) may be stored in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory.
- The malfunction "Fuel Level too Low" is always recognized and stored when there are misfiring or fuel system malfunctions.
- As a rule, always eliminate the misfiring and other fuel system malfunctions first.

- Fill fuel tank with at least 20 liters (5-112 gallons).
- Check DTC memory and erase.
- Generate readiness code. Refer "Monitors, Trips and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Code)/Generating, Readiness Code" Testing and Inspection
- Road test.
- Check DTC memory.

If "Fuel Level too Low" is the only malfunction stored in DTC memory (SAE P1250/VAG17658):

- Connect VAG1598/19 test box to ECM harness connector. Refer to "Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/VAG1598/19 Test Box, Connecting" Testing and Inspection
- Check wiring for short circuit to Ground between ECM/test box socket C8 and instrument cluster.
