Additional Safety Requirements For Side Airbag

Additional Safety Requirements For Side Airbag

The same safety specifications apply for side airbag as for driver and passenger airbag.

- Only original seat covers and rear seat covers should be installed, which have been released by Audi AG for side airbag (recognized on airbag label on cover).
- The rear seatback should not be covered with upholstery covers, since the function of the side airbag is affected.
- Seat pads, mats or similar, which could affect the function of the occupied seat sensor and the airbag, are not permissible.

NOTE: There is no occupied seat sensor installed on the drive seat.

- For vehicles without heated seat there is a heating element without a heating wire installed.
- The seatback foam should not be cut out at side airbag area.
- Side airbags have a scrap date (label on the B-pillar). If side airbags are replaced, the scrap date label from the new side airbag should be removed and placed over the old label on the B-pillar. After 14 years the side airbag and the label must be replaced.
- For vehicles without adhesive label on B-pillar, enter airbag-change in service booklet.

CAUTION:
- Airbag units which have dropped onto a hard surface or show signs of damage must not be installed in the vehicle.
- Airbag units which have not been activated should be marked and returned to the manufacturer for disposal (use airbag unit transport container).
- Always replace any airbag system component that has been mechanically damaged (example: dented or cracked).
- The storage and transportation of airbag units must comply with the regulations for explosive substances.
- Do not install commercially available loose fitting seat covers.
- When installing a backrest cover ensure that the cover seam is straight in the area of the side airbag.
- Replace all seat cover clips.
- Only use original seat cover clips.
- For safety reasons always replace the seat cover if it is damaged in area of the side airbag, e.g. torn, burn holes, etc.
- Repairs to the seatback cover at side airbag area must not be conducted (due to special thread and exactly defined seam).
- Do not use upholstery needle or similar with a point in airbag area and sensor mat.
- After deploying side airbags the seatback cushion must be replaced.
- After an accident all damaged components must be replaced. If no damage can be determined to the airbag unit, airbag unit can be used.
- If side airbags are replaced, the label for the airbag number is removed from the new side airbag and placed over the old label on the seat pan.
