Seat Belt Systems: Service and Repair

Pyrotechnic Belt Tensioner, Disposal

NOTE: Whenever possible, pyrotechnic belt tensioners must be deployed outside the vehicle. Use Airbag and Pyrotechnic Deployment Device J-44210 and follow instructions in booklet.

WARNING:
- Gas generators which have not been ignited are a risk when scrapping.
- According to accident risk specifications gas generator for belt tensioner must be deployed before scrapping.
- This is necessary, because pyrotechnical material when activated improperly (e.g. scrapping with cutting torch) could cause injury.

CAUTION:
- All seat belts which are replaced (e.g. after an accident if belt tensioner is deployed) must be ignited before removal.
- Excluded are seat belts, which due to quality deficiencies (stick, do not roll up) are unused and are in the shop for analysis.
- Transport specifications for explosive materials.

NOTE: The procedure that follows is for deployment of tensioners mounted inside a vehicle.

Procedure When Igniting Pyrotechnical Belt Tensioners

- Remove B-pillar trim.
- Remove seat belts at mounting point on seat frame.
- Cut off belt above belt lock tab with scissors (approx. 20 cm above belt retractor).
- Remove connector of belt retractor and connect wiring harness set with part number 8D1 971 259 to belt tensioner.
- Cut off connector at other end, cut both cable ends free, separate cable sleeve until cable ends are at least 30 cm apart.

CAUTION: No person should be in the vehicle.

- Ignite gas generator with doors closed and window open using wiring harness and battery outside of vehicle.

Procedure When Igniting Rear Pyrotechnical Belt Tensioners

- Remove hat shelf.
- Remove seat belt at outer mounting point.

CAUTION: No person should be inside the vehicle.

- Ignite gas generator with doors closed and window open using wiring harness and battery outside of vehicle.

All:
- Ventilate vehicle sufficiently afterward.
- After removal belts can be disposed.
After touching ignited belt tensioner wash hands.
- Safety specifications when in contact with pyrotechnic-technical belt tensioner should be noted.
