Impulse Wheel
NOTE: The following special tools and testing equipment are necessary for this work:
^ VW 401 - Pressure plate
^ VW 402 - Pressure plate
^ VW 412 - Thrust piece
^ 2040 - Pipe piece
^ 32-109 - Insertion pipe
Removal
- Remove left drive flange, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
- Remove circlip (arrow -A-) for ball bearing.
- Place left drive flange bracket on pressure plates VW 401 and VW 402 and press drive flange out of bracket using thrust piece VW 412.
- Remove impulse wheel for speedometer VSS -G22- from drive flange or bracket.
Installation
- Install impulse wheel for VSS -G22- (arrow) on drive flange and check installation position.
NOTE:
^ The drivers on the impulse wheel must engage in the groove of the drive flange.
^ If necessary, apply Vaseline to the contact surface of the impulse wheel in order to keep it in proper position during installation.
- Press bracket (together with ball bearing) onto left drive flange as follows:
Place drive flange on pressure plate VW 401.
Press bracket on using thrust piece VW 412, pipe piece 2040 and pressure pipe 32-109.
- Install circlip (arrow -A-).
- Install left drive flange.
- Check final drive fluid level and correct as necessary.
- Tighten the following to:
Left drive flange bracket to transmission: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
Drive axle to drive flange: 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
Drive axle to wheel hub:
M14 bolt (always replace): 120 Nm (89 ft lb) + 90°
M16 bolt (always replace): 200 Nm (148 ft lb) + 90°
Heat shield to transmission: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
