Drive Axles, Removing and Installing

Notes:
^ Wheel alignment after carrying out repair, Refer to Alignment, Description and Operation.
^ Vehicles with headlight vertical aim control, Refer to Lighting and Horns.

Special tools and equipment





^ VAG 1383 A and VAG 1359/2





^ VAG 1752

Removing
^ Pry hub cap off wheel or remove using extraction tool 3208.





^ Remove collar bolt -arrow-.

WARNING! To reduce the risk of accident, vehicle must be standing on the ground when loosening and tightening collar bolt.

^ Take off wheel.
^ For plugged in ABS wheel-speed sensor: pull ABS wheel speed sensor -1- out slightly from wheel bearing housing.
^ Pull ABS wheel-speed sensor slightly out of wheel bearing housing.
^ Secure brake disc with a lug bolt.





^ Remove brake caliper (2nd bolt not visible).

Notes:
^ Suspend brake caliper from bodywork with binding wire.
^ Never leave brake caliper hanging from brake hose.

^ Remove brake disc.
^ Remove splash plate -arrows- (3rd bolt not visible).





^ Insert spring tensioner VAG 1752/1 with spring holder VAG 1752/3 into coil spring.

WARNING! To reduce the risk of accident, make sure coil spring is properly positioned in spring holder VAG 175213.

^ Compress spring until it can be removed.





^ Disconnect drive axle from drive flange -1- on rear final drive.
^ Remove connecting link -2- and press out of wheel bearing housing.
^ Remove bolts -3- and -6-.
^ Remove tie rod -4- and pull out of wheel bearing housing.
^ Remove collar bolt -5,





^ Pull wheel bearing housing in direction of arrow.
^ Remove drive axle.

Pay special attention to the information when installing

Note: Replace bolts and self-locking nuts as described in instructions in exploded view, Refer to Suspension, Service Precautions.

^ Check whether gasket has been bonded in at inner joint of drive axle.
^ Bolt drive axle to drive flange on rear final drive: 77 Nm (57 ft. lbs.).
^ For plugged in ABS wheel-speed sensor: press ABS wheel speed sensor into wheel bearing housing until stop.
^ For bolted ABS wheel-speed sensor: screw in ABS wheel speed sensor to 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
Item -2- (from m.y. 1997): 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) plus additional 90 ° turn





^ Proceed as follows to tighten bolted joints -3-, -4-, and 6-:
^ Lift trapezium link until shock absorber has been compressed approximately 40-50mm (e.g. using transmission lifter VAG 1383 A and plate VAG 1359/2).

Tightening torques
^ Items -3- and -6-: 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.) plus additional 90° turn
^ Item -4-: 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.)
^ Item -4- (from m.y. 1997): 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) plus additional 90° turn

Installing coil spring:





^ The lower spring support has a groove.
^ This groove is to be inserted in the lug at the trapezium link.

^ Turn end of coil spring until it makes contact with lower spring support.
^ Then turn upper spring support (not shown) until it makes contact with top end of spring.
^ Slacken off spring.
^ Bolt brake caliper to wheel bearing housing:
^ Tighten collar bolt to 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) plus additional 180° turn.

WARNING! To reduce the risk of accident, vehicle must be standing on the ground when loosening and tightening collar bolt.
