Windshield Wiper System, Removing And Installing
NOTE:
- Switch the ignition off when working on the wiper system.
- Make sure that the wiper motor is in the park position before disassembling the wiper arms.
- Remove cover from electronics box and if necessary, remove control module for wiper motor before removing the wiper motor.
- Windshield wiper motor can only be removed together with the windshield wiper frame. The crank on the wiper motor must face forward when removing and installing the motor.
1 - Retaining nuts M8
- 16 Nm (12 ft lb)
2 - Mounting bolts
- 8 Nm (12 in lb)
Removing wiper arms
- Remove wiper blades.
- Pry off two protective caps on wiper arms using screwdriver.
- Loosen nuts (arrows) but do not remove 4 completely.
- Loosen wiper arms -1- using gentle movement.
- Completely remove nuts and remove wiper arms.
- Pull out retaining brackets (2x) for airflow grille.
NOTE: The airflow grille of the Audi A4 can be separated in the middle.
- Carefully pry off left part of airflow grille -2- at edge of windshield.
- Remove left part of airflow grille.
Removing windshield wiper frame with linkage and wiper motor
- Remove bolts -1- (3x).
- Carefully tilt wiper frame -2- up at rear (arrows) and then completely remove assembly to right out from plenum chamber.
- Disconnect harness connector on wiper motor.
Removing wiper motor from linkage
NOTE: Do not loosen the nut on the wiper motor crank.
- Pry linkage -3- from ball and socket joint (arrow).
- Remove bolts -2- (3x) on wiper motor bracket.
- Remove wiper motor -1- from wiper motor bracket.
Installing
- Install wiper motor -1- together with crank onto wiper motor bracket.
- Reconnect linkage -3- and, at same time, adjust park position of linkage -a-.
- Connect harness connector on wiper motor.
- Insert wiper frame (wiper motor first) into plenum chamber.
- Tilt wiper frame forward and tighten nuts to 8 Nm (71 in. lb).
- Carry out remainder of installation in reverse order of removal.
- Adjust wiper blades park position.
