Steering Column Switches, Removing and Installing

Steering Wheel With Airbag, Removing/Installing
- Disconnect battery ground strap

WARNING: Disconnect the single-pin connector for the airbag system power supply, before removing steering wheel or steering column switches. For more information refer to "Air Bag Systems".





- Remove screws securing airbag in steering wheel with Torx insert T30 6 Nm (53 in. lb) from the rear, left and right.

NOTE: Always observe safety precautions for airbag systems when working on airbag system components, for more information refer to "Air Bag Systems".

- Carefully pivot airbag unit back.





- Disconnect harness connector from airbag unit and place airbag unit facing up.





- Pull out adjustable steering column as far as it will go and set to lowest position.
- Remove two Phillips screws -2- in lower half of trim for steering column switches.
- Remove M4 Phillips screw -1-.
- Carefully pull out upper half -3- of trim for steering column switches.
- Disconnect harness connectors for horn contact -10- and airbag spiral spring -12-.
- Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position.
- Remove nut securing steering wheel 40 Nm (62 ft lb) and remove steering wheel -11-.
- Remove socket head screw for clamp -4-.
- Loosen two screws -9- and remove release lever handle -8-.
- Carefully pull out steering column switches about 15 mm (0.6 in.) in an axial direction from steering column.
- Pry off all harness connectors for steering column switches.
- Carefully remove steering column switches together with trim -5- over adjuster lever.
- Install in reverse sequence.
- Ensure that the steering lock housing cover (plastic moulding) is in position.

NOTES:
- The gap between the steering wheel and trim for steering column switches must be approx. 3 mm (0.12 in.): if necessary adjust using a suitable gauge by moving the steering column switches.
- Position front wheels straight-ahead and ensure the turn signal switch is in centered position (turn signal cancelling cam) before installing the steering wheel on the steering column.
