Differential/Transmission Housing Double Seal, Replacing

The following special tools and test equipment are required for this work:
VW 681 - Lever
3382 - Thrust piece

Notes:
- A faulty double seal allows ATF or gear oil to flow through the center vent of the shaft seal (between the two sealing lips) into the torque converter bell housing.
- In addition, a faulty double seal may allow ATF to flow into the differential which causes the differential to be overfilled and fluid to flow out at the breather of the differential.

Removing
- Remove front wheels.
- Remove heat shield for right and left drive shafts.
- Remove right and left drive shafts.

- Remove central bolt of right flange shaft-arrow -; hold flange shaft with drift to prevent it from turning.
- Place drip tray below.
- Pull out right flange shaft.
- Remove right transmission support.

- Remove bolts of differential cover in opposite order of tightening order shown, -12- to -1-, and remove cover.
- Pull out differential and take off.

- Take bearing outer race for differential -1 - and the shim -2 positioned behind it out of transmission housing by hand.

Note:
The shim -2- is gauged and must not be replaced with a shim of a different thickness.

- Remove left flange shaft.

- Use lever VW 681 to pull out double seal.

Note:
The lever VW681 must be placed behind the two sealing lips of the seal Do not position it against the outer circumference of the seal or the contact surface in the transmission housing will be damaged. Guide the lever carefully when prying out the seal.

Installing
- Examine seat of seal in transmission housing for signs of damage; rework, if necessary.

Note:
Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to the outer circumference and the sealing lip of the seal.

- Install double seal onto thrust piece tool 3383 so projecting sealing lip -arrow- of seal faces toward tool.

- Use 3383 to install double seal until tool makes contact

- Install shim -2- and bearing outer race for differential -1 -into transmission housing by hand until they are fully in. Do not twist.

- Replace O-ring -arrow-.
- Install differential into transmission housing.

- Install differential cover.

Tightening order:
- 1st stage: Tighten bolts - 1-, -2- and -3- by hand.
- 2nd stage: Tighten bolts -1- to -12- to final torque of 23 Nm (17 ft lb) in order shown.

- Install left flange shaft.
