Passenger Side Airbag, Removing And Installing

WARNING: Observe the safety precautions for side airbags.







1 - Passenger side airbag unit
- Different versions are possible
- Refer to parts list for correct combination of instrument panel and passenger side airbag unit

Removing

See Caution before beginning repairs on electrical system
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap/cable.
- Remove glove box.
- Disconnect connector - 6 - Fig. 1.

WARNING: Never disconnect the red 2-pin connector on the front passenger side airbag unit.







- Remove nuts - 4 - (4x).
- Remove airbag unit.
- Set down airbag unit with impact cushion facing upward.

Installing

WARNING: Observe the safety precautions for side airbags.

- Make sure that connector - 6 - engages properly (audible click).
- Install airbag unit.
- Switch on ignition.

WARNING: Make sure that nobody is in the vehicle.

- Connect battery Ground (GND) strap.

2 - Support
- Must be replaced if airbag has triggered
- Remove airbag unit.
- Remove bolts - 5 - (4x).
- Remove nuts - 3 - (2x)







3 - Nut (2x)
- Tightening torque: 18 Nm (13 ft lb)
- Must be replaced if airbag has triggered
4 - Nut (4x)
- Tightening torque: 9 Nm (80 in.lb)
- Must be replaced if airbag has triggered
5 - Bolts (4x)
- Tightening torque: 9 Nm (80 in.lb)
- Must be replaced if airbag has triggered
6 - Connector
7 - Frame for airbag unit
- Must be replaced if airbag has triggered
- Remove front passenger side airbag unit.







- Remove nuts - 8 - (3x).
- Remove backing plate - 11 -.
- Remove bolts - 9 - (3x).
- Remove bolt - 10 -.
8 - Nut (3x)
- Tightening torque: 4.5 Nm (40 in.lb)
9 - Bolts (3x)
- Tightening torque: 4.5 Nm (40 in.lb)
10 - Bolt (1x)
- Tightening torque: 4.5 Nm (40 in.lb)
11 - Backing plate

- Use screwdriver to lift connector - 1 - for front passenger side airbag over retainer tab - 2 - and pull off connector in direction of -arrow 3 -.

NOTE:
- After connecting battery, check vehicle equipment (radio, clock, power windows) as per Repair Manual and/or Owner's manual.
- If the airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K75- signals a malfunction after assembling then the DTC memory must be erased and checked again with VAG 1551 scan tool
