Side Airbag, Removing And Installing

WARNING: Observe the safety precautions for side airbags.







1 - Side airbag, driver's/front passenger side

Removing

See Caution before beginning repairs on electrical system
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap/cable.
- Remove backrest trim.
- Detach backrest cover in area of side airbag - 1 -.
- Release retainer of connector - 3 -.
- Disconnect connector - 3 - from airbag unit - 1 -.
- Remove screws - 2 - (2x).

WARNING: Do not re-use screws - 2 -. Replace self-tapping screws with the M5 bolts and nuts supplied.
Drill out mounting holes to 5.5 mm.
Tightening torque: 5.5 Nm (49 in.lb).


NOTE: To give a clear illustration, anti-squeak pad is not shown.

- Carefully unclip side airbag - 1 - at retaining hook - 5 -.
- Remove side airbag - 1 -.
- Set down airbag unit with impact cushion facing upward.







Installing

NOTE: Do not cut away anti-squeak pad around retaining hooks - 5 -.

- Lift up anti-squeak pad.
- Drill out mounting holes to 5.5 mm.
- Remove burr on back-side.
- Pull anti-squeak pad over backrest frame.
- Clip in side airbag - 1 - with anti-squeak pad.
- Insert screws - 2 -, lift up anti-squeak pad, install nuts and tighten to 5.5 Nm (49 in.lb).







- Pull replacement date sticker off airbag unit and stick it over old one on B-pillar.
- Pull airbag number sticker off airbag unit and stick it over old one on seat pan.
- Install seat.
- Switch on ignition.

WARNING: Make sure that nobody is in the vehicle.

See Caution for connecting Telematics battery.
- Connect battery Ground (GND) strap.

- Tightening torque: 5.5 Nm (49 in.lb)

4 - Backrest frame
5 - Retaining hooks

NOTE:
- After connecting battery, check vehicle equipment (radio, clock, power windows) as per Repair Manual and/or Owner's manual.
- If the airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K75- signals a malfunction after assembling then the DTC memory must be erased and checked again with VAG 1551 scan tool.
