Left Drive Flange Seal, Replacing



LEFT DRIVE FLANGE SEAL, REPLACING

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items
^ VW401 thrust plate
^ VW402 thrust plate
^ VW407 punch
^ VW412 thrust disc
^ VW681 extractor lever
^ 32-109 driving sleeve
^ 2040 press tube
^ 3384 assembly mandrel
^ VAG1358 oil extractor

Removing

WARNING: Only loosen the drive axle/wheel hub bolt and the wheel bolts when the vehicle is standing on its wheels.

- Remove wheel.
- Remove noise insulation for left drive axle from wheel housing.
- Remove left drive axle
- Place oil drain pan under transmission.





- Remove filler plug (arrow) and drain at least 0.5 liters of fluid from final drive using VAG1358A.

CAUTION: Oil must be drawn out of the final drive, otherwise there is a risk of gear oil mixing with ATF

- Remove left drive axle heat shield (if installed).
- Remove speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G22-.
- Remove bracket for harness connector from drive flange bracket.





- Remove drive flange bearing bracket (arrows).
- Remove drive flange.

Removing Oil Seal





- Remove circlip (arrow -A-) for grooved ball bearing.





- Press drive flange out of drive flange bearing bracket.
- Pull out drive flange oil seal using VW681.

Removing Grooved Ball Bearing





- Press grooved ball bearing out of bearing bracket.

Installing Grooved Ball Bearing





- Press new grooved ball bearing into bearing bracket.

Installing Oil Seal





- Drive new seal in to stop using 3384.
Make sure seal is seated correctly.





- Install impulse wheel for VSS -G22- (arrow) on drive flange and check installation position.

Note: The drivers on the impulse wheel must engage in the groove of the drive flange.





- Press bearing bracket with grooved ball bearing onto drive flange.





- Insert circlip (arrow -A-).

Left Drive Flange Seal, Replacing





- Replace O-ring (arrow -B-) in drive flange bearing bracket.





- Check that there are no sharp edges on transmission end of drive flange (arrow) (de-burr edges if necessary).
- Install drive flange.
- Install drive axle.

- Install wheel.
- With transmission installed, check final drive fluid level.
