Steering Column: Testing and Inspection

Steering column, checking for damage
Visual check
- Check all steering column parts for damage.

Functional check
- Check that steering column turns easily without jerking.
- Check that steering column can be adjusted for height and reach.

If the vehicle is involved in an accident, the deformation elements on the steering column can move out of position.
These deformation elements are located at the two top steering column mountings.

If there is reason to suspect that damage may have occurred, remove the steering column far enough to check distance - a -.
- Use special tool - 3204 - when performing this measurement.
- Measure distance with caliper gauge.
- Distance - a - must not be more than 23 mm (max.).

If distance - a - is greater than 23 mm, this means that the steering column has been damaged and must be replaced.
