Wheel Bearing Housing
Special tools and equipment
- 3287A Ball joint puller
- V/176 Ball joint puller
- VAG1332 torque wrench: 40-200 Nm
- VAG1576 Torque wrench: 75-400 Nm
- 3424 Spreader tool
- 3283 Press
- VAG1383A Transmission jack
Removing
- Pull off trim cap for light alloy wheels (use puller in vehicle tool kit).
- Lift vehicle until the load on the front axle is relieved.
- Loosen 12 - point nut.
- Remove wheels.
- Detach coupling links from suspension struts on both sides of vehicle.
- Pull spring clip out of retainer and detach brake hose.
- Release speed sensor wiring from suspension strut.
- Unbolt brake caliper from wheel bearing housing.
- Secure brake caliper to body with wire.
- Remove brake disc (brake disc is secured to hub with a Phillips - head bolt).
- Remove brake disc splash plate.
- Remove upper nut on ball joint.
Notes: To protect ball joint threads, leave nut on a few turns.
- Install ball joint splitter as shown in illustration and press out ball joint.
- Unscrew nut from tie rod end.
Notes: To protect ball joint threads, leave nut on a few turns.
- Using puller Kukko V /176, press track rod off steering arm.
- Unplug connector for ABS wheel speed sensor.
- Press drive axle out.
Notes: When pressing drive axle out ensure sufficient clearance is available.
- Remove drive axle from wheel bearing housing and tie up.
- Housing to suspension strut.
- Insert special tool 3424 into slot (arrow).
- Turn ratchet handle through 90° and pull ratchet handle off 3424.
- Pull wheel bearing housing off shock absorber downward.
When installing, note the following points in particular:
Notes: Observe notes and refer to Splines, Drive Axle/Wheel Hub
- Clean splines/thread on drive axle.
- Clean splines in hub.
- Screw on new 12-point nut as far as possible.
- Secure brake caliper to wheel bearing housing (125 Nm/92 ft. lbs.).
- Insert ABS wheel speed sensor connector and wire into retainers.
- Lower vehicle, but ensure wheels do not touch ground (otherwise the wheel bearing could be damaged).
- Apply brakes (second person necessary).
- Fully tighten 12 - point nut.
