Section E - Track Control Arm InstallationIMPORTANT:
- Check for correct track control arms in new parts kits:
- Kit 8L0 598 323 - has 4 track control arms with no notches
- Kit 8L0 598 323A - has 2 track control arms with no notches and 2 with 2 notches
NOTE:
On track control arms in kit 8L0 598 323 A, the two parts with 2 notches -arrows- are used for identifying lower track control arms (1J0 505 323 G). The notch position on the vehicle can be either forward or rearward of the ball joint.
- Install new upper track control arm -1- (1J0 505 323 E) into sub frame -2- by sliding it inward as far as possible then downward
CAUTION:
ALIGN BALL JOINT WITH TRACK CONTROL ARM BEFORE INSTALLATION TO AVOID DAMAGING RUBBER BOOT ON BALL JOINT
- Pull trailing arm slightly outward -arrow-
- Carefully guide new upper track control arm -1- onto ball joint -2-
- Insert new 80 mm long bolt (N 104 280 01) through new upper track control arm -3- and sub frame and tighten with new nut -1- (N 101 064 02) to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.)
IMPORTANT:
Final torque of bolt must be done after alignment with wheels on the ground
NOTE:
- Track control arm and bolt installation may require the assistance of an additional technician
- Correctly inserted bolt points toward rear of vehicle
- Insert new 75 mm long bolt -1- (N 104 162 01) through new upper track control arm -3- and ball joint and tighten new nut -2- (N 101 064 02) to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.)
IMPORTANT:
Final torque of bolt must be done after alignment with wheels on the ground
NOTE:
- Correctly inserted bolt points toward FRONT of vehicle
- If vehicle is equipped with automatic headlight control, parts must be installed on lower track control arm prior to installation on vehicle
- For vehicles up to V.I.N. TRU_ _ _ 8N_Y1007668, install new linkage arm -1- (1J0 941 299B) on new lower track control arm (1J0 505 323E /323G) using new clamp (1J0 941 447A) with new nuts (N 011 183 12) and tighten to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.)
- For vehicles after V.I.N. TRU_ _ _ 8N_Y1007668, reinstall linkage arm -1- on new lower track control arm (1J0 505 323G) reusing clamp with new nuts (N 011 183 12) and tighten to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.)
- Distance from lower control arm inner attaching point to linkage arm must be set to 153 mm
- Install new lower track control arm -4- (1J0 505 323E / 323G) onto ball joint in trailing arm
- Insert new 75 mm long bolt -2- (N 104 162 01) through new lower track control arm and ball joint and tighten with new nut -3- (N 101 064 02) to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.)
IMPORTANT:
Final torque of bolt must be done after alignment with wheels on the ground
NOTE:
Correctly inserted bolt points toward rear of vehicle
- Insert new 80 mm long bolt (N 104 280 01) through new lower track control arm -4- and sub frame and tighten nut -2- (N 101 064 02) to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.)
IMPORTANT: Final torque of bolt must be done after alignment with wheels on the ground
NOTE: Correctly inserted bolt points toward rear of vehicle
- Install new bolt -5- (N 908 142 01) and tighten to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.) and turn an additional 90°
- Remove transmission jack VAG 1383A with wood, from trailing arm
- On vehicles with Xenon headlights, attach linkage arm to sensor using new nut -1- (N 011 183 12)
- Firmly hold linkage arm -2- with narrow (4 mm wide) 9mm wrench or a pair of needle nose pliers and tighten nut -1- to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.)
CAUTION:
DO NOT DAMAGE LINKAGE ARM SEAL
- Reinsert ABS wheel speed sensor harness in harness connector and harness in holder and close holder cover
- Return to Section A and repeat procedure for the right side of the vehicle
NOTE:
There are no linkage components for Xenon headlights on the right track control arms
- After new parts have been installed on both sides of the vehicle, proceed to Section F to reinstall rear wheels
