Spring and Suspension Strut, AWD Vehicles


Spring and suspension strut on vehicles with All Wheel Drive (AWD), overview





1 - Hex - bolt,
- Tighten to 60 Nm
- Always replace
2 - Mounting bracket for suspension strut
3 - Gas - filled strut
- Removing and installing go to Shock Absorber, Service and Repair
- Functional check go to Shock Absorber, Service and Repair
- Individually replaceable
for Allocation refer to parts supplier
- Dispose of properly
- Checking suspension strut for leaks and noises
4 - Stabilizer bar
5 - Self - locking nut
- Tighten to (25 Nm)
- Always replace
6 - Hex - bolt,
- Tighten to 110 Nm
- M14 x 1.5 x 90
7 - Coupling link
8 - Longitudinal control arm
9 - Spacing washer
- Only installed on vehicles with rough terrain equipment
10 - Stop buffer
- Tighten to 10 Nm
11 - Coil spring
- Check for paint damage, repair if necessary
- Note color code
- Allocate various versions refer to Parts Supplier
12 - Base plate
13 - Threads in longitudinal carrier
Threads can be repaired using Hell - Coil thread insert when thread of welded nut are damaged.
14 - Threads in crossmember
Threads can be repaired using Hell - Coil thread insert when threads in crossmember are damaged.

Removing
- First remove spring.
- Remove wheel.
- Unclip wire for sensor from bracket.





- Partially remove wheel housing liner.





- Remove upper bolt for suspension strut (arrow).
- Slowly lower longitudinal control arm with transmission lift, e.g. VAG1383.





- Remove lower bolt for suspension strut (arrow).
- Remove suspension strut from vehicle.

Installing





- Also remove coupling link (arrow) from stabilizer bar.

This facilitates installation of lower bolt for suspension strut.
Remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
Bolts with bonded rubber bushings must be tightened with vehicle standing on its wheels with vehicle stationary. Otherwise, the rubber bushing will be stressed and have a shortened service life.

Tightening torques:
Suspension strut to vehicle mount 60 Nm
Always use new bolts.
Suspension strut to longitudinal control arm 100 Nm + 90°
Vehicle must be standing on its wheels and have a person seated in the rear seat.
