Suspension strut/coil spring, removing and installing
Special tools required
- T 10001 shock absorber set
- VAG 1 752/1 Suspension strut clamp
- 3186 Socket insert 21 mm AF
- VAG1752/4 Spring retainer
- 3424 Spreader tool
- V.A.G 1383 A Transmission jack
Removing and installing suspension strut
- Remove wheels.
- Detach coupling link from suspension strut (on both sides of vehicle).
- Pull spring clip out of bracket and detach brake hose.
- Release speed sensor wiring from suspension strut.
- Remove bolt securing wheel bearing housing to suspension strut.
- Insert special tool 3424 into slot (arrow).
- Turn ratchet handle through 90° and pull ratchet handle off 3424.
- Press brake disc in direction of suspension strut by hand.
- Otherwise the shock absorber tube can move off - square and stick in the wheel bearing housing.
- Pull wheel bearing housing off shock absorber downward.
- Remove hex nut for upper shock absorber mounting.
1 - Commercially available ratchet handle
2 - T 10001/8
3 - T 10001/11
4 - T 10001/5
When installing, note the following points in particular:
- Before installing suspension strut, coat suspension strut mounting (arrows) with special lubricant G 294 421 A1.
- Insert suspension strut and secure to suspension strut tower.
- Tightening torque: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.)
1 - Commercially available ratchet handle
2 - T 10001/8
3 - T 10001/11
4 - T 10001/5
- Locate suspension strut on wheel bearing housing.
- Using transmission jack, raise wheel bearing housing until it is possible to insert bolt securing suspension strut to wheel bearing housing.
- At the same time, press brake disc in direction of suspension strut by hand, otherwise the shock absorber tube can move off - square and stick in the wheel bearing housing.
- Take out spreader tool - 3424 -.
Further installation of the suspension strut is performed in reverse sequence
Tightening torques:
Coupling link to suspension strut (use new nuts) 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) + 90°
Wheel bearing housing to suspension strut (use new nut and bolt) 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) + 90°
Removing and installing coil spring
Notes: Note different spring and shock absorber versions; see vehicle data sticker.
- Compress coil spring with tensioning device VAG1752/1 until upper spring plate is free.
- Unscrew hex nut from piston rod.
- Take off individual parts of suspension strut and coil spring with tensioning device VAG 1752/1.
