Restraints and Safety Systems: Service Precautions
Caution!- Checking, removing, installing and repairing may only be performed by qualified personnel.
- Never perform tests using a test light or multimeter.
- Airbag system may only be tested when installed in vehicle, using VAG 1551 Scan Tool. This does not apply to the spiral spring.
- Airbag components must not be opened or repaired. Always use new pads.
- No objects of any kind may be placed over the airbag flap on front passenger's side
- Never attempt to open the airbag flap by force.
- Replace the complete instrument panel if the airbag flap is damaged.
Caution!
- Airbag units have an expiration date (sticker on left "B" pillar). If airbag units are replaced, pull sticker with expiration date off new airbag and place it over old sticker. Airbag unit and sticker must be replaced after 15 years.
- Do NOT install an airbag unit or triggering unit which has been dropped from a height of more than twenty inches.
- Always replace any airbag system parts which have experienced mechanical damage (dents, cracks).
- Airbag unit must be installed immediately after being taken out of stock If there is a work interruption during installation, do not leave the airbag unit unattended.
Caution!
- After removing from the vehicle, ALWAYS lay the airbag unit down with impact absorbing pad or open side facing up.
- Airbag unit must not be treated with grease, cleaners or similar materials, and must not be exposed to temperatures above 100 °C (212 °F), even for short periods.
- If an airbag system has been activated as the result of a collision, ALWAYS replace the following components:
Driver airbag unit
Front passenger airbag unit
Control Module with holder
Airbag Spiral spring
Driver seat belt
Front passenger seatbelt
Caution!
- Storage, transportation and disposal of airbag units are subject to laws for flammable solids.
- Active airbag units (gas generators): carefully remove active (not deployed) airbag units from the vehicle and return to the Warranty Parts Test Center for proper disposal DO NOT deploy airbag in vehicle.
- Deployed airbag units (gas generators): deployed airbag units DO NOT have to be disposed of as hazardous waste but can be discarded in normal manner. However, it is recommended that deployed units be recycled
- Airbag Control Modules which have a red pad identification label do not contain a mercury switch and can be discarded in normal manner. Airbag Control Modules which DO NOT have a red pad identification label contain a mercury switch and must be disposed of following laws governing hazardous waste disposal
- Airbag units must not be stored for longer than 3 months.
