Drive Flange Seal, Replacing
Transmission installed
- Observe general repair instructions.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items
^ Oil seal extractor lever VW 681
^ Drift VW 195
^ Drift VW295
^ VAG1306 drip tray
^ T10037 puller
Notes:
^ The following illustration shows removal and installation of left seal.
^ The same procedure is used for the left and right seals.
^ A spacer ring is installed between the polygon bearing and differential pinion for drive flanges with a spline diameter of 30 mm.
Removing
- Turn steering to left onto full lock stop.
- Remove heat shields (arrows -1- and -2-) above right-hand drive axle.
- If fitted, remove heat shield above left hand drive axle.
- Disconnect drive axle from flanged shaft.
- Tie-up drive axle as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive axle.
- Place drip tray VAG1306 underneath transmission.
Note: To avoid damage to the needle bearings (polygon bearings) or differential during removal, the drive flange must be removed evenly, parallel and without one sided pressure
Removing left drive flange
- Remove drive flange, to do so thread lower support of T10037 puller into housing (arrow).
Remove right drive flange
- Remove drive flange, to do so thread lower support of T10037 puller into housing (arrow).
- Always replace drive flange circlip.
- Clamp drive flange in vice, using soft jaws. Use new circlip -A- to press old circlip out of groove in drive flange.
- Pull out drive flange oil seal with VW 681.

5. Spacer ring - (is installed additionally if spline diameter is 30 mm)
Notes:
^ Rough running of the polygon bearings with the drive flange removed is no sign for faulty bearings. An acoustic test can only be performed in installed condition.
^ Watch for damage to the polygon bearings (e.g. cracks in bearing outer ring)
^ Polygon bearings can only be replaced together with drive flange.
^ A spacer ring -5- is installed between the polygon bearing and differential pinion for drive flanges with a spline diameter of 30 mm.
Installing
- Fill space between sealing and dust lips with multi-purpose grease.
- Lightly oil outer circumference of seal.
- Knock new right-hand drive flange oil seal in 5.5 mm below housing outer surface; do not cant seal when doing this.
Note: For repairs using old drive flange, oil seal must be pressed in to approx. 6.5 mm so that the new oil seal is not resting on the running surface of the old seal.
- Knock new left-hand drive flange oil seal in 6.5 mm below outer surface of cover using VW195; do not cant seal when doing this.
Note: For repairs using old drive flange, oil seal must be pressed in to approx. 6.5 mm so that the new oil seal is not resting on the running surface of the old seal.
- Knock drive flange in with drift VW 295.
- Bolt drive axle to drive flange.
- Fit drive axle heat shields.
- Check oil level in transmission.
Tightening torques
