VAG 1551 Scan Tool, Connecting and Entering Address Word


Note: The VAG 1552 scan tool or VAS 5051 vehicle diagnostic testing and information system can be used instead of the VAG 1551 scan tool, however VAG 1552 scan tool does not have the facility for priming out the information in the display.

- Observe the test requirements for the system concerned.





- With ignition switched off, connect the scan tool to the diagnostic connector using VAG 1551/3B cable. The diagnostic connector is under the dashboard on the left side.

Notes:
^ If the display remains blank, check connections of diagnostic connector
^ The PRINT button is used for switching on the printer (the indicator lamp in the button comes on when the printer is switched on).
^ Depending on the program, additional operating information can be printed out by pressing HELP button of VAG 1551 scan tool.





- Switch on ignition.
- Switch on printer by pressing PRINT button of scan tool.
- Press button -1- for "Rapid data transfer" operating mode.

Note: The address word selects the control module of the on-board system that you wish to test with the scan tool. It is made up of two digits, which are given in the relevant parts of this information.

For instance, press buttons -0- and -3- to enter the address word for "Brake electronics".

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Note: If an error occurs in the diagnostic communication between the scan tool and the control module, the display will show one of the four messages:





- Press HELP button to obtain a print-out of the possible causes of the error.





- Test diagnostic wiring ("K" wire).
- Test power supply and Ground (GND) connection to ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104-.

- Repair error
- After repairing possible causes of error, enter address word 03 for brake electronics once again and confirm with -Q-button.





If the diagnostic communication between the scan tool and the control module is established and works properly, the display will now show the control module identification (X), the system designation (Y), the hardware and software version (Z), the coding (V) and the workshop code (W).

Notes:
^ The --> button is used for moving forward within the program
^ The various on-board systems to be tested are described in more detail in the relevant parts of this information.
^ The control module index can only be changed by installing a new control module

- Press --> button.
