Rear Brakes, Servicing
Note:
^ Always install complete repair kit
^ After replacing brake pads and before moving vehicle, depress brake pedal several times firmly to properly seat brake pads in their normal operating position.
^ When siphoning brake fluid, always use a bleeder bottle that is used exclusively for brake fluid. Brake fluid is poisonous. NEVER siphon brake fluid with your mouth!
^ Brakes can be checked using any standard brake test stand as long as both drive capstans have a roller speed of not more than 5.5 km/h.
^ Brake line tightening torque: 15 Nm.
1. Hex bolt, Self-locking, 35 Nm
^ Always replace
^ When loosening and tightening, counterhold on guide pin
2. Brake pads
3. Brake carrier with guide pins and protective cap
^ Supplied as preassembled replacement part with sufficient grease on guide pins
^ If protective caps or guide pins are damaged, install repair kit. Use grease packet supplied to lubricate guide pins
4. Cylinder bolts
^ Only vehicles with steel wheel carrier, 60 Nm
4. Cylinder bolts
^ Only vehicles with aluminum wheel carrier, 70 Nm and turn additional 90°
5. Brake disk
^ Pads on both sides of axle must always be replaced together.
^ Remove brake caliper before removing
^ Only resurface uniformly on both sides, starting at the thickness representing new condition.
^ Check for sufficient wear limit.
6. Brake caliper housing
^ To remove, unscrew brake pads from brake carrier.
^ Do not unscrew brake hose when replacing brake pad
^ Servicing brake caliper; Refer to brake caliper.
^ Tighten brake hose at brake caliper housing to 45 Nm.
^ Hose must be mounted without twisting
Brake pads, removing and installing
Special Tools and Equipment
^ 3272 reset tool
Removing
Note: When removing, mark brake pads that will be used again. Install in the same position, otherwise braking effect will be uneven!
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove wheels.
- Counter-hold guide pins and remove attachment bolts from brake caliper housing.
- Remove brake pads.
Note: Press piston back into caliper housing using reseeing before inserting new brake pads. Before pushing back the piston, siphon some of the brake fluid out of the brake fluid reservoir. Otherwise, especially if reservoir has been topped off, fluid will overflow and cause damage.
WARNING: Brake fluid is poisonous NEVER siphon brake fluid with your mouth!
Installing
- Install pistons by turning 3272 reset and unscrew tool toward right
- Insert brake pads.
- Secure brake caliper housing using new self-locking bolts.
- Tighten brake caliper housing to 35 Nm.
Note:
^ Repair kit includes four self-locking hex-bolts which must always be installed.
^ After replacing brake pads and before moving vehicle, always depress brake pedal several times firmly to properly seat brake pads in their normal operating position.
^ Always check basic setting of rear brakes after replacing brake pads.
- Tighten wheels to 120 Nm when installing.
- Check brake fluid level and top off, if necessary.
Basic setting
Parking brake cable must not be tensioned before basic setting (release parking brake).
Control
- Alternately press lever for parking brake to
stop using screwdriver (arrow).
Parking brake cable is tensioned too much if lever is pulled away from stop at opposite brake caliper during this.
Note: For the sake of illustration stop is shown with brake caliper removed.
- Loosen adjustment nut for parking brake using 3343 parking brake adjustment wrench until both levers are at stop of brake caliper.
