Steering Column Switches, Removing and Installing




WARNING!
- Airbag system components must only be checked, removed, installed or repaired by qualified Service Department personnel.
- Whenever reconnecting the battery, the passenger compartment must not be occupied. Always refer to air-bag system safety precautions.


Removing:

- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Turn front wheels and steering wheel to straight ahead position. Pull adjustable steering column out as far as it will go and set to lowest position.







- Using Torx T30 bit -1-, remove screws for airbag unit from left and right sides of back of steering wheel. Tightening torque 7 Nm (62 in. lb).
- Carefully pivot airbag unit toward front, disconnect connector and place airbag unit facing up.







- Remove both screws -8- and carefully pull out upper half of steering column trim -1-.
- Disconnect electrical connector for spiral spring.
- Remove nut -12- and steering wheel -11-.
Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ft lb)


CAUTION!
When removing the steering wheel, do not unwind the spiral spring from its center position.



- Remove screws -5- and -6- and Torx screw -9-, then remove lower steering column trim -7-.
- Disconnect electrical connector for steering column height adjuster.
- Loosen socket head bolt -2- at clamp far enough until steering column switch can be moved easily.
- Carefully disconnect electrical connectors from steering column switches.
- Remove steering column switches from steering column.

Installing:







- Install steering column switches -2- and hand-tighten socket head bolt -3- to maintain gap between steering wheel -1-
-a- 3 mm (1/8 in.).

- Remove steering wheel again and finish installation in reverse order of removal.
