Component Notes And Information
NOTE: During removal and installation procedures, refer to the component location illustration above and component notes below.
1 Wheel bearing housing
2 Clamping sleeve
- Lubricate all around sleeve with brake cylinder paste before installing in wheel bearing housing
- Press into wheel bearing housing to stop
3 Wheel speed sensor
- Pull out to remove
- To install, lubricate all around with brake cylinder paste and press in to stop by hand
- For wire routing refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
4 Bonded rubber bushing
- Pulling out refer to Figs. 6, 7 and 8, below
- Pulling in refer to Fig. 9, below
5 Wheel bearing
- Inner diameter is stepped
- Installation location: large inner diameter of wheel bearing faces wheel hub
- Pressing out refer to Fig. 2, below
- Bearing inner race, pulling Fig. 3, below
- Pressing in refer to Fig. 4, below
6 Splash guard Bolt onto wheel bearing housing
7 Bolt
- Tighten to, 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
8 Wheel hub
- Stepped diameter
- Pressing out refer to Fig. 1, below
- Pressing in refer to Fig. 5, below

NOTE: Use only puller with clip (e.g. KUKKO 20411 with thrust pad 30-11).
Fig. 4 Pressing In Wheel Bearing
- Large inner diameter of wheel bearing faces wheel hub.
- Press wheel bearing -A- in to stop.

CAUTION: During pressing procedure, thrust pad VW 511 must only press on the bearing inner race, to avoid damaging the bearing.
Fig. 6 Attaching Special Tools To Bushings In Wheel Bearing Housing
- Attach special tools 3292 and 3349 so that jaws of each special tool engage between flange of bonded rubber bushing and wheel bearing housing.
- Turn threaded spindle of the respective special tool in to stop, until bonded rubber bushing is pressed out of wheel bearing housing just a small amount.
- Push special tool 3293/1 into bonded rubber bushing.

- Attach cross bar 3292/2 to tool 3292 using M1Ox8O bolts (-A-) provided with tool.
- Turn spindle -1- into cross bar until one half of bushing is pressed out.

- Install tool 3349 into bushing which has remained in wheel bearing housing.
- Insert thrust piece 3349/1 with threaded spindle 3292/3.
- Turn spindle 3292/3 in far enough so that second bushing half is pressed out.

- Install halves of bonded rubber bushings at right angles in wheel bearing housing with thrust pieces 3292/3 and threaded spindle.
- Pull bushings in to stop by tightening threaded spindle.
