Distributor Gear, Removing and Installing
Removing
^ Disconnect left and right three way catalytic converters from rear exhaust system and press both three way catalytic converters apart.
^ Remove heat shield for drive shaft.
^ Remove drive shaft from drive flange .
^ Place oil drain pan underneath distributor gear to catch fluid.
^ Drain fluid from distributor gear.
^ Loosen mounting screws (arrows) for distributor housing diagonally.
CAUTION!
Remove the distributor gear housing from the back of the transmission slowly and carefully. Otherwise, the Torsen differential could fall out of the transmission.
^ Press Torsen differential (complete) to rear, off output pinion (to right, in line with straight arrow).
Installing
The distributor gear is installed in reverse order of removal. In addition, the following work steps have to be carried out.
^ Check for presence of dowel sleeves (arrow-A-) and (arrow-B-).
^ Place gasket.
Note:
^ Put a thin coat of Vaseline on the sealing surface before installing the gasket to prevent it from slipping.
^ Slide cleaned magnets into cast holding pocket -1- in intermediate flange.
^ Install Torsen differential on splines of output shaft and of lowest front gear (to left, in line with straight arrow).
Notes:
^ When installing the Torsen differential, turn it slightly to ensure that the connecting teeth engage properly without damage.
^ It must be possible to turn the installed Torsen differential by hand (in either direction indicated by rotational arrow).
^ Install distributor gear housing complete with installed front gears and rear output flange on transmission.
^ Install mounting bolts for distributor housing and tighten by hand.
^ Tighten bolts to final torque in diagonal sequence.
Note:
When first tightening the bolts by hand, make sure the slot between the housing cover and the transmission housing decreases uniformly all around the perimeter.
^ Fill distributor gear with fluid and check level.
