Attachment Bulletin # 010406

Group: 01

Number: 04-06

Date: Aug. 30, 2004

Subject:
Update Programming (Flashing) Engine Control Module (ECM) to Correct Cold Start Engine Stumble

Model(s):
S4, A6 & allroad with 2.7L Turbo and Automatic 2001 > 2002
Transmission Only

Condition

After cold start the engine runs rough. Vehicle may stumble, buck and/or shutter on initial acceleration. Engine may stall at idle when transmission is shifted from Neutral/Park to Drive or Reverse.

Condition usually lasts for less than 30 seconds after engine start. Afterwards the vehicle starts and runs without any of these complaints.

Condition may be occasionally associated with the DTCs shown.

When procedure applies to vehicles within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, use the table.

Service

Verify if condition is accompanied by any DTCs.

CAUTION!
When performing the reflash procedure, ALL DTCs for all Systems are erased DTCs linked to Guided Fault Finding function tests will be lost. Therefore, always address stored DTCs for Customer concerns unrelated to the reflash procedure first.

If the diagnostics of the engine does not reveal any faulty component, Reprogramming of the ECM will be necessary.

- Access and record radio code.

- Pull radio out from instrument panel enough to access electrical connectors.

- Disconnect all electrical connectors -arrows- from multi-pin connections

CAUTION!
The following "Update - Programming" (flashing) process may overwrite any "TUNED" ECM programming.

A "TUNED" ECM is described as any ECM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Volkswagen of America, Inc..

If you encounter a vehicle with a "Tuned" ECM, prior to performing the "Update - Programming" (flashing) procedure:

^ Your Dealership should place the vehicle owner on notice in writing, that their ECM was found to have been tuned, and that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Volkswagen of America, Inc. warranties.

^ For any repair requested by the owner under warranty or outside warranty that requires flashing, which will automatically wipe out the "Tuning" program, your Dealership should advise the owner of the above and get Owner's written consent (see Control Module Tuning form shown) to the flashing procedure

Tool requirements

^ VAS 5052 with Basis CD V.06.21 or higher.

^ VAS 5051 with Basis CD V.07.00 or higher (when available).

^ VAS6017K Lead Adaptor.

^ "Update - Programming" (flashing) CD (Part No. 8D0 906 961).

Note:
Additional copies of the "Update - Programming" CD (Part No. 8D0 906 961) may be ordered from the Volkswagen Technical Literature Ordering Center at wwwaudi.ddsltd.com, or by calling 1-800-544-8021 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday This number can be dialed in both the United States and Canada.

Vehicle requirements

^ Battery MUST have minimum no-load charge of 12.5V (failure to maintain voltage during update process can lead to ECM failure) (it is advised to use an approved battery charger to maintain battery voltage).

^ VAS 5052: connected to vehicle with battery voltage requirements met and maintained.

^ VAS 5051: connected to vehicle and to 110V AC Power supply at all times during procedure.

^ Any appliances with high electromagnetic radiation (i.e. mobile phones) switched OFF.

^ Vehicle electrical consumers are off (i.e. radio, lights, A/C, etc.).

CAUTION!
Non-observance of the following points may lead to ECM failure!

VAS 5052 or 5051 must always be connected to the approved power supply at the approved voltages. Under no circumstances should the power supply be interrupted or the diagnostic connector unplugged during the flash procedure. Any appliances with high electromagnetic radiation (i.e. mobile phones) must be switched OFF

CAUTION!
Do not use the VAS 6017A Adaptor when doing the update programming (flashing). Control module can be damaged. Adaptor is for checking control modules only.

IMPORTANT!
The CD ROM should be in the VAS 5052 or VAS 5051 when the scan tool is started up or, inserted when the start screen is showing. Check the light on the CD drive. It must have stopped flashing when going to the "Select Vehicle System" screen or the CD ROM will not be recognized.

"Update - Programming" (flashing) procedure, checking for update match

- Switch ignition ON.

- Switch VAS 5052/5051 ON and insert Update Programming (flashing) CD into CD drive as soon as start screen appears

NOTE:
You must return to the start screen before starting a new (flashing) session, otherwise the Update Programming (flashing) CD will not be recognized by the tester.

- Select "vehicle Self-Diagnosis".

- Select vehicle system "01-Engine electronics".

IMPORTANT!
ECM part number and software level must be reviewed to determine if ECM requires updating or replacement.

- Check software level -arrow-.

- Print out the displayed screen.

If ECM software level is "4000" -arrow-.

- No Action Required. Do not complete this Technical Bulletin.

If ECM software level is not "4000".

- Select forward arrow > on navigation bar.

^ The "Update - Programming" function -black arrow- will appear whether the ECM requires updating or not whenever the Update - Programming CD ROM is installed in the diagnostic tool.

^ Select Diagnosis function "06 - End output" -white arrow-.

PRIOR to performing procedure to "Update - Programming" (flash) the ECM:

- Select Diagnosis function 00 "Collection services".

- Select "Check DTC memory - complete system". which will interrogate all fault memories.

^ When DTC interrogation is complete "Function Complete" will be displayed.

CAUTION!
When performing the reflash procedure, ALL DTCs for all Systems are erased. DTCs linked to Guided Fault Finding function tests will be lost. Therefore, always address stored DTCs for Customer concerns unrelated to the reflash procedure first.

- Select backward arrow < on navigation bar to return to vehicle systems screen.

- Select vehicle system "01-Engine electronics".

"Update - Programming" (flashing), performing

- Select "Update - Programming" option at bottom of screen (arrow).

- After selecting "Update - Programming" function, new program version 4000 is indicated along with the approximate amount of time to do the updating.

- By selecting forward arrow >, the programming procedure begins.

CAUTION
Once "Update - Programming" function has been started, switching ignition OFF or disconnecting the diagnostic connector may damage the ECM.

- Similar screen appears:

The previous data in the ECM is erased and the new data is being transferred to the module from the flash CD.

Note:
Please do not carry out any other work on the vehicle during "Update - Programming". Process could be interrupted.

NOTE:
- If, during the "Update - Programming", a fault message is displayed:

- Confirm that VAS 5052 or VAS 5051 diagnostic tool power supply is adequate and that ALL appliances with high electromagnetic radiation (i.e. mobile phones) are switched OFF.

- The "Update - Programming" (flashing) process must then be started from the beginning using the "Repeat" button (arrow).

Once "Update - Programming" (flashing) is complete, the control module must be re-initialized.
