Vehicle Damage Warnings

Safety precautions and basic notes on service and repairs

WARNING:
^ The ABS and EDL systems are basically maintenance free.
^ Tests, installation and repair work must always be carried out by properly trained technicians.
^ Failure to observe the points made in this Repair information may result in damage to the system and could make the vehicle unsafe.

Notes:
^ Before carrying out repair work, determine the cause of the malfunction using On Board Diagnostic.
^ When installing a new hydraulic control module, always check the coding.Refer to On Board Diagnostics.
^ Always switch off the ignition before carrying out installation or repair work. On vehicles with a coded radio, find out the anti - theft code and disconnect the bakery ground strap.
^ When working with brake fluid, observe the relevant safety precautions and notes.

Notes:
^ After completing work, which involves opening the brake system, always bleed the brake system (e.g. using V.A.G 1869), Refer to Brake Bleeding, Service and Repair.
^ Absolute cleanliness is required when working on the anti - lock brake system. Do not use products, which contain mineral oils (e.g. oils, greases etc.).
^ After completing work on the hydraulic unit, the electronic control module, the speed sensors or the wiring harness, all the vehicle safety systems must be checked. The same applies if complete assembly units have been replaced (e.g. replacement of brake lines after an accident).
^ Thoroughly clean all unions and the adjacent areas before loosening, but do not use aggressive cleaning agents such as brake cleaner, petrol, thinners or similar.
^ Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover.
^ Carefully cover or seal open components if repairs cannot be carried out immediately (use sealing plugs from repair kit 1 HO 698 311 A).
^ Do not use fluffy cloths.
^ Only remove replacement parts from packaging immediately prior to installation.

Notes:
^ Only use genuine packed parts.
^ When the system is open do not work with compressed air and do not move the vehicle.
^ Ensure that no brake fluid enters wire connectors.
^ When working with paint, do not expose the electronic control module to temperatures of more than 95°C for long periods. If working for long periods (e.g. around 2 hours) the maximum permissible temperature is 85°C.
^ Before carrying out welding work with an electric welding unit, check the relevant safety notes.
Refer to appropriate safety information.

Work to be carried out after completing repairs
After connecting the battery:
^ Enter the radio anti - theft code.
Refer to Radio operating instructions
^ Set the clock.

Basic setting for electric window lifters (open and close functions):
^ Switch on ignition.
^ Run driver's door window all the way up to its top (closed) position, release window lifter switch, and pull up switch again for about 2 seconds.
^ Repeat this procedure for the front passenger's window.
^ The automatic "one - touch" open and close function of the windows is now activated.
^ Check DTC memory and erase any DTC's that are stored.
^ On vehicles with gasoline engine, perform adaptation of throttle valve control module:

Road testing
Certain malfunctions will only be detected when the car is moving, so the system can be checked by performing a road test. Maintain a speed above 60 km/in for a period of 30 seconds. After ensuring that it is safe to do so, apply the brakes hard enough to activate ABS- controlled braking (this can be felt from the pulsation at the brake pedal).

WARNING:
^ If you drive the vehicle after a malfunction has been detected by On Board Diagnostic, bear in mind that the function of the brake system is restricted. Otherwise there is a risk of accident, since the brake pressure at the rear wheels is no longer controlled by the electronic brake force distribution function. This can result in excessive braking at the rear, and the tail of the vehicle may skid unexpectedly.
^ If test and measuring instruments are required during a test drive, these must always be secured to the rear seat and operated by a second person from the rear seat position. If test and measuring instruments are operated from the front passengers seat and the vehicle is involved in an accident, the occupant of the seat could be seriously injured if the airbag is triggered.
