Shutter wheel for wheel speed sensor, checking; and right rear/left rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G44-/-G46-, removing and installing
- Remove wheel.
- Unscrew brake caliper (65 Nm) and hang to side. Secure brake caliper to vehicle using welding wire since brake line must not be placed under load or kept taut.
- Clean shutter wheel if shutter wheel holes are plugged with dirt.
Replace the shutter wheel together with the wheel hub if a mechanical wheel speed sensor malfunction is diagnosed by the ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104- that is influencing its signal without authorization, no damage can be found at the wheel speed sensor and the shutter wheel is damaged or the wheel bearing play is too large.
- Disconnect harness connector -1- from wheel speed sensor wire.
- Unscrew socket head bolt -2- for right and left rear wheel speed sensors -G44-/-G46-.
- Remove right and left rear wheel speed sensors -G44-/-G46-.
- Before inserting sensor, clean inner surface of sensor mount and coat with securing grease G 000 650.
- Insert ABS wheel speed sensors.
- Tighten socket head bolt -2- to 8 Nm.
- Connect harness connector -1-.
- Install brake caliper.
Installing rear wheel speed sensor wiring
- Remove wheel.
- Remove wheelhousing liner.
- Disconnect harness connector -1- for wheel speed sensor wire.
- Remove appropriate interior side trim, locate welding connection (arrow) and remove insulation bushing from welding connection.
- Disconnect the wheel speed sensor wire in front of the welding connection using wire stripper from VAS1978 and remove faulty piece of wiring.
- Strip 15 mm of insulation at end of wire using wire strippers and fold uninsulated wire in half.
- Thread new wheel speed sensor wire
Be sure not to twist wheel speed sensor wire in wheel housing when installing wheel speed sensor.
- Connect harness connector -1-.
- Connect wire to wheel speed sensor.
- Disconnect two-pin connector at new wheel speed sensor wire if present using wire strippers, strip 15 mm of insulation at end of wire using wire strippers and fold uninsulated wire in half.
- Instead of welding point, use an appropriate crimp connector from VAS1978 wiring harness repair set to connect wheel speed sensor wire.
Note: The operation manual for the VAS1978 wiring harness repair kit generally forbids the repair of any lines in the ABS system. This rule only pertains to the shielded lines in this system.
