System Checking Via Indicator Lights
After the ignition is switched on, the system conducts an automatic test sequence. The indicator light for ABS - K47 (right arrow) is activated by the ABS control module and lights up for 2 seconds .
If the system does not perform the test process:
- Check voltage supply to contact 4 of control module - J104 through terminal 75 at ignition switch.
If a malfunction which affects only the ABS system is recognized by On Board Diagnostic, ABS is shut off.
The indicator light for ABS - K47 (right arrow) does not go out after the ignition is switched on and the test sequence is completed.
The conventional brake system remains fully functional.
Malfunction causes could be:
^ Voltage supply is under 10 Volts.
^ A malfunction which affects only the ABS occurs.
^ A sensor malfunction has occurred after the last vehicle start (sporadic malfunction). In this case the ABS indicator light switches off automatically after the vehicle has been restarted and has exceeded 20 km/h.
Indicator light for ABS is switched off after ignition is switched on and test sequence is completed (approx. 2 seconds), but red brake warning symbol (left arrow) remains on.
Malfunction causes could be:
^ Brake fluid level too low.
^ Malfunction in instrument cluster. go to Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations binder
When a malfunction which affects the ABS and electronic brake force distribution is recognized by On Board Diagnostic, they are shut off.
The indicator light for ABS - K47 (right arrow) does not go out after the ignition is switched on and the test sequence is completed.
The red brake warning symbol (left arrow) also lights up. Note, this symbol can only be activated by the ABS or ABS/EDL system after the ignition has been switched on and road speed first exceeds 10 km/h or engine speed first exceeds 2000 RPM.
In this case the brake system is no longer fully functional. Braking response can be impaired since the brake pressure to the rear wheels is no longer controlled by the system.
Malfunction causes could be:
^ The control module is not coded (code 00000) or coded incorrectly. In this case the indicator light for ABS - K47 flashes one time per second.
^ A malfunction which affects the ABS and the electronic brake force distribution exists.
In output diagnostic test mode and basic setting modes:
The indicator light for ABS flashes 4 times per second. The red brake warning symbol flashes 2 times per second when road speed first exceeds 10 km/h or engine speed first exceeds 2000 RPM after the ignition has been switched on.
