Overview





Notes:
- NEVER put weight on wheel bearing when drive axle is removed.
- If vehicle is resting on wheels and needs to be moved, drive axle must be installed in outer joint.
- Welding and straightening work on supporting or wheel carrying components of the suspension is not permitted.
- Always replace self - locking nuts.
- Always replace corroded bolts/nuts.

1 - Socket - head bolts,
- Tighten to 40 Nm
2 - Subframe
- Removing and installing; Refer to Cross-Member
3 - Drive axle
- Drive axle from wheel hub, pressing in and out
4 - Hex bolt M 12 x 1.5 x 80
- Always replace
5 - Hex bolt M 12 x 1.5 x 75
- Always replace
6 - Upper lateral control arm
- Removing and installing; Refer to Control Arm
- Allocate various versions refer to Parts Supplier
- Removing and installing; Refer to Control Arm
7 - Upper bushing
- Check rubber bushing for damage and tears
8 - Socket - head bolt
- Tighten to 65 Nm
9 - Brake caliper
- Servicing; Refer to Brakes and Traction Control
10 - Hex - bolt,
- Tighten to 10 Nm
11 - Self - locking 12 - point nut
Observe Notes and go to Splines, Drive Axle/Wheel Hub.
- Always replace
12 - Phillips - head screw,
- Tighten to 4 Nm
13 - Brake disc
14 - Wheel hub with rotor for speed sensor
- Rotor is welded to wheel hub
- Checking rotor for wobble; Refer to Brakes and Traction Control
15 - Retaining clip
- Check for proper fit
16 - Wheel bearing
- Always replace, destroyed during removal
17 - Backing plate
18 - Self - locking nut
- Tighten to 70 Nm + 1/4 -turn (90°)
- Always replace
19 - Lower lateral control arm
- Allocate various versions refer to Parts Supplier
20 - Lower bushing
- Check rubber bushing for damage and tears
21 - Hex - bolt,
- Tighten to 90 Nm
- Always replace
22 - Bonded rubber bushing
23 - Longitudinal control arm
24 - Hex - bolt,
- Tighten to 75 Nm
- Always replace
25 - Mounting bracket for rear axle
- After installing, check movement of rear axle, adjust if necessary
- Can be corrected by sliding mounting bracket
26 - Spacing washer
- Only installed on vehicles with rough terrain equipment
27 - Stop buffer
- Tighten to 10 Nm

- VAG1383A engine/transmission hoist





- VAG1389A/1 Foot pump with high pressure hose
If available in shop, VAG1389/1 hand pump can also be modified for use as a foot pump.





- VAG1459B hydraulic removal/installation tool for wheel bearing
- Hollow piston cylinder HKZ - 15 with hydraulic pressure unit E - 0 - 204 - T
- Tie bolts E - 0 - 217 + 218
- Special nut E - 8 - 214
- Front and rear bearing tool E - 5
- Centering unit with clamp E - 76 - 2





- VAG1383A engine/transmission hoist
- Pressure sleeve E - 44
- Bell E - 40
- Front and rear bearing tool E - 6 - 1
- Front and rear bearing tool E - 13 - 1
- Pressure disc E - 39

Removal
- Remove drive axle.
- Remove wheel.





- Remove mounting bolts - 1 - from brake caliper and remove brake caliper.
- Remove Phillips - head screw for brake disc and remove brake disc.
- Remove speed sensor for ABS from longitudinal control arm housing.
- Pressing off wheel hub





- Insert pressure disc 1 as shown in illustration

Position pressure disc so that it is resting completely on bolt heads - 2 -.





- Attach centering unit with clamp E - 76 - 2.
1 - Hollow piston cylinder HKZ - 15 with hydraulic pressure unit E - 0 - 204 - T
2 - Centering unit with clamp E - 76 - 2





- Attach bell - 1 -, hollow piston cylinder - 2 - with tie bolt - 3 - and special nut - 4 -.
1 - Bell E - 40
2 - Hollow piston cylinder HKZ - 15
3 - Tie bolt E - 0 - 217
4 - Special nut E - 8 - 214
5 - High pressure hose with quick - release
6 - Pressure disc E - 39
- Build pressure by pumping foot pump.
- Check to make sure all tools are properly centered.
- Place VAG1 383/A transmission lift underneath (danger of accident if parts fall off when pressing off wheel hub).
- Press off wheel hub from wheel bearing by pumping.

Ejecting wheel housing





- Remove securing ring.
- Place front and rear bearing tool - 1 - on rear side of wheel bearing.
- Attach hollow piston cylinder - 2 - with tie bolt - 3 and special nut - 4 -.
- Build pressure by pumping foot pump.
- Check to make sure all tools are properly centered.





- Press off wheel bearing by pumping.

- Remove inner ring of bearing from wheel hub.

Pressing in wheel bearing
- Place wheel bearing on wheel bearing housing.





- Place front and rear bearing tool - 1 - on rear side of wheel bearing housing.
- Attach hollow piston cylinder - 2 - with tie bolt - 3, special nut - 4 - and front and rear bearing tool - 5 -.
- Build pressure by pumping foot pump.
- Check to make sure all tools are properly centered.





- Press in wheel bearing by pumping.

- Always install securing ring.

Pressing in wheel hub
- Place wheel hub on wheel bearing.





- Attach centering unit with clamp E - 76 - 2.

Removing bonded rubber bushing from longitudinal control arm





- Attach tools as shown in illustration
- Remove bonded rubber bushing by turning support arm bearing tool.

Installing bonded rubber bushing
- Attach tools as shown in illustration





- Install bonded rubber bushing by turning support arm bearing tool.

Installing longitudinal control arm Remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
If installation position of mounting bracket was not marked at longitudinal control arm, installation position must be determined.

Installing lower bushing





- Attach tools as shown in illustration
- Install bushing by turning support arm bearing tool.

Removing upper bushing
- First remove spring.





- Remove bolt - 1 - for lateral control arm.
- Remove bolted connection for lateral control arm at subframe.
