Rear Cross-Member: Service and Repair


Subframe with rear final drive, overview (vehicles with All Wheel Drive)





1 - Socket - head bolt
- Tighten to 60 Nm
2 - Bonded rubber bushing for rear final drive
- Removing and installing; Refer to Differential Mount
3 - Socket - head bolt
- Tighten to 60 Nm
4 - Bonded rubber bushing for subframe
- Provided as a replacement part in a sealed plastic bag
- Do not use bonded rubber bushings that were stored in the open
- Removing and installing go to Cross-Member Bushing, Service and Repair
5 - Hex bolt M 12 x 1.5 x 85
- Tighten to 110 Nm + 1/4 -turn (90°)
- Always replace
6 - Subframe
- Removing and installing; Refer to Cross-Member
7 - Support for rear final drive
8 - Socket - head bolt
- Tighten to 60 Nm
9 - Socket head bolt
- Tighten to 40 Nm + 45°
- M10 X 55
10 - Socket head bolt
- Tighten to 40 Nm + 45°
- M10 X 40
11 - Rear final drive
- Servicing; Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain
12 - Self - locking nut
- Tighten to (25 Nm)
- Always replace
13 - Stabilizer
14 - Hex - bolt
- Tighten to 20 Nm
15 - Clamp
16 - Coupling link

Subframe, removing and installing

Special tools and equipment





- VAG 1 383A engine/transmission hoist





- T10031 mount

Removing
- First remove spring.
- Remove wheels.





Always mark installation position of driveshaft before removing (arrows). Imbalance will be too large if installed in offset position.
- Open double pipe clamp behind catalytic converter and remove rear portion of exhaust system.
- Remove driveshaft from rear final drive.

- Remove heat shield from rear muffler.





- Disengage parking brake cable at brake caliper.
- Remove parking brake cable from longitudinal control arm.
- Parking brake cable does not need to be removed from longitudinal control arm if subframe needs to be lowered. This is necessary, for example, when removing the bonded rubber bushings.





- Unclip wire for sensor from bracket (arrow).
- Remove ABS wheel speed sensor from longitudinal control arm housing.





- Disconnect brake lines (arrow) from each other.





- Remove lower bolt for suspension strut (arrow).





- Place transmission lift, e.g. VAG1383A, under rear axle - 1 -.
- Use T 10031 mount.





- Insert pin (arrow / - 1 -) into holes of subframe.
- Disconnect vacuum hose and electric wire.
- Mark installation position of mounting bracket at mount.





- Remove mounting bracket from mount (arrow).





- Remove bolts for axle beam (arrows).
- Slowly lower rear axle with transmission lift, e.g. VAG1383.

Installing
Remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
- Tighten bolts for subframe and mounting bracket in the pre - marked installation position.
After installing, camber and toe setting must be checked on an alignment stand.

Tightening torques:
Mounting bracket at mount, Tighten to 75 Nm
Always use new bolts
Subframe at attachment point, Tighten to 110 Nm + 90°
Always use new bolts
Drive shah to final drive, Tighten to 60 Nm
Suspension strut to longitudinal control arm, Tighten to 100 Nm + 90°
