Vehicles With 4-Cylinder Engine
CAUTION: Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch the ignition off.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery.
- After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows.
- After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-on the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module.
- Disconnect battery Ground strap with ignition switched off.
NOTE: Steps after re-connecting voltage supply.

Removing
WARNING: Hot steam or hot coolant may escape when opening coolant reservoir, cover cap with rag and open carefully.
- Open cap on coolant expansion tank.
- Remove engine cover.
- For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts -arrows-for exhaust pipe of stationary-/auxiliary heater at noise insulation.
- Loosen screws or quick releases -1- and -2- and remove front noise insulation.
- Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 below engine.
- Pull off retaining clip -1- and pull out engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor -G2- - item 2-.
- Drain coolant only from radiator.
- Disconnect top coolant hose from coolant pipe -arrow-.
- Detach radiator fan control module -arrow-, disengage control module and place to one side.
- To loosen ribbed belt, turn belt tensioner in direction of arrow.
- Detach ribbed belt from generator belt pulley.
- Release tensioning element.
- Remove top and bottom bolts -arrows-and swing generator forward.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector -2-.
- Unscrew terminal D+ -item 1-.
- Remove generator.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
- Make sure that ribbed belt is correctly routed and properly seated.
- Fill up with coolant:

- Connect battery. Required steps.
- Start engine and check running of belt.
