Fluid - A/T: Testing and Inspection

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), checking and changing
(Automatic Transmission 01V)

ATF level, checking

Special tools and equipment
- VAS 5051 tester
- VAS5051/1 or VAS5O51/3 diagnostic cable
- VAG1306 drip tray
- VAG1924 ATF filler tool
- Protective glasses

Test requirements:
- Transmission must not be in emergency running mode.
- Vehicle on level ground.
- Selector lever in "P", let engine run at idle.
- NC system and heating switched off.

Notes:
- ATF level changes with ATF temperature.
- Performing ATF level check when ATF temperature is too low causes overfilling.
- Performing ATF level check when ATF temperature is too high causes insufficient filling.
- Excess filling and insufficient filling both affect the function of the transmission.
- ATF temperature is read off using the VAS5O51 tester.

Procedure

- Secure container of VAG1924 ATF tiller tool as high up on vehicle as possible.

- Remove noise insulation panel (arrows).

Connect VAS 5051 tester
All functions previously performed with the VAG1551 can also be performed using the new VAS5O51 tester in operating mode "Vehicle On Board Diagnostic (OBD)".

Checking ATF temperature

- Connect VAS5O51 tester to Data Link Connector (DLC) using VAS5O51/1 diagnostic cable with ignition switched off.

- Switch on tester (arrow).

The tester now requires up to 3 minutes to finish booting.
- Switch on ignition.
- Select operating mode: Press "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" selection on display.
- Press "02 - Transmission electronics" on display.
- Perform dialog to confirm control module number belonging to selected system.
- Select "08 - Read Measuring Value Block" on display.
- Choose Display Group 4 via the "Read Measuring Value Block" and "Change Display Group" touch screen displays.

Display on VA55051:
The first line of display field -1- displays ATF temperature.

Checking and correcting ATF level

Notes:
- ATF level is checked at the ATF check plug.
- ATF level is correct if a little bit of fluid still escapes at the ATF check plug between 35°C and 45°C For warm countries 50°C (dependent on the fluid level when warming up)
- Start engine.
- Raise vehicle.
- Place VAG1306 drip tray under transmission.

WARNING! Wear protective glasses.

- Once an ATF temperature of 35°C is reached, remove ATF check plug (arrow) and drain excess ATF if necessary.

- If ATF flows out from the ATF filler plug hole before the ATF reaches 40°C, the ATF level (arrow) is OK.

Note:
ATF check plug must be closed again by 45°C For warm countries 50°C

- Add ATF if no ATF has escaped from the ATF check plug hole by 40°C.

- Insert VAG 1924 ATF filler tool into an opening (arrow) in the protective cap, but do not knock cap upward.

- Fill with ATF using VAG 1924 ATF tiller tool until ATF exits from the check hole.

- Always replace seal (arrow) for ATF check plug.
- Tighten ATF check plug to 80 Nm.
- Switch off motor.
- Select diagnostic function "06 - end output" in selection.

Display on VA55051:
- Switch off ignition and disconnect diagnostic connector after this indication is displayed.
- Install noise insulation.
