Side Curtain Airbag (Sedan), Removing And Installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required







- Torque wrench V.A.G 1783







- Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A

CAUTION: Note safety precautions for working on airbags and side curtain airbags.

NOTE:
- There are 2 airbag versions. Both versions are described in the following. Determine which version the vehicle has and performed the corresponding activities.

Version 1







1 - Side curtain airbag

- Removal:
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove sun visor.
- Remove upper trim on A-pillar.
- Remove upper B-pillar trim.
- Remove roof end.
- Remove D-pillar trim.
- Disconnect harness connectors.
- Loosen three bolts - 4 -.
- Loosen six bolts - 5 -.
- Remove screw - 7 -.
- Remove three brackets - 2 - from roof frame.
- Place front part of side curtain airbag module on seats.
- Loosen two bolts - 6 -.
- Remove head-level airbag - 1 - from vehicle.

- Installing:

CAUTION:
- Note safety precautions for working on airbags and side curtain airbags.
- Always follow side curtain airbag installation procedure.


- Insert center bracket - 2 -.
- Insert remaining brackets - 2 -.
- Install two bolts - 6 -.
- Tighten bolt - 7 -.
- Secure airbag module to B-pillar with two bolts - 5 -.
- Secure three brackets - 2 - using three bolts - 5 -.
- Install last bolt - 5 -.
- Install outer bolts - 4 -.
- Install center bolt - 4 -.
Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Observe the following when doing so:
- Switch on ignition.

CAUTION: No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.

- Connect the battery ground (GND) strap.

NOTE:
- Follow safety measures after connecting battery
- If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A, cleared and then rechecked.

4 - Bolts (3x)
- Tightening torque 4 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
5 - Screws (6x)
- Tightening torque 4 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
6 - Bolts (Qty. 2)
- Tightening torque 4 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
7 - Screw
- Tightening torque 4 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
8 - Side curtain airbag connector
9 - Gas generator







Side curtain airbag fastener to B-pillar

1. Side curtain airbag
- Screw in bolts - 5 -.
Tightening torque: 4 Nm







Disconnect side curtain airbag connector

- Press catch - A - and disconnect connector in direction of arrow.

1 - Bolt(Qty. 10)
- Tightening torque 4 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
2 - Cap nut
- Tightening torque
3 - Retainers (2x)
4 - Bolt(Qty. 1)
- Tightening torque 4 Nm
- Self-locking
- Replace after each disassembly
- Threaded holes for screws must always be cleaned (for example, with thread cutter)
5 - Bracket (Qty. 1)

- Removal:
- Disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap.







- Remove sun visor.
- Remove upper trim on A-pillar.
- Remove upper B-pillar trim.
- Remove roof end.
- Remove D-pillar trim.
- Disconnect connector on side curtain airbag
- Remove bolt - 4 -.
- Remove bolts (Qty. 2) - 1 - in area of gas generator.
- Loosen cap nut - 2 - in area of gas generator. Remove bolts - 1 -.
- Unclip bracket - 3 - and remaining brackets up to bracket - 5 - from roof frame.
- Remove cap nut - 2 - in area of gas generator.
- Firmly hold side curtain airbag, unclip bracket - 5 - from roof frame and remove airbag from vehicle.







Side curtain airbag connector, disconnecting

- Removing:
- Unlock connector lock with a small screwdriver - 3 -.
- Disconnect connector - 1 - from ignition pill - 2 -.

- Installing:

CAUTION:
- Note safety precautions for working on airbags and side curtain airbags.
- Always follow side curtain airbag installation procedure.


- Clip bracket - 5 - into roof frame.







- Engage side curtain airbag by threaded pins - 2 - and tighten nut by hand.
- Clip in bracket - 3 - and remaining brackets.
- Tighten bolt - 1 - on bracket - 5 -.
- Tighten remaining bolts - 1 -.
- Tighten bolt - 4 -.
- Tighten nut 2.

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:
- Switch on ignition.

CAUTION: No one should be in vehicle when connecting battery.

- Connect the battery ground (GND) strap.

NOTE:
- Follow safety measures after connecting battery.
- If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) K75 shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 A, cleared and then rechecked.
