Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 15 number 08 - 15 dated November 21, 2008 for the reasons listed below.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
CONDITION
The customer may report an excessive ticking noise from the engine.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
Ticking noise comes from one of the cylinder heads. If during diagnosis the noise appears to be more audible in the upper engine or cylinder head area, one or more camshaft lobes or camshaft followers may be suspect (excessive wear).
Figures 1 - 3 depict excessive wear.
PRODUCTION SOLUTION
Not applicable.
SERVICE
1. Remove the valve cover of the affected cylinder head.
2. Inspect the camshafts and cam followers for the wear and tear patterns described above.
^ If one or more cam lobes and cam followers show the wear and tear pattern depicted in Figure 1 and 2, replace the affected camshaft and cam followers using the repair kit listed below.
^ If one or more cam followers show the wear and tear pattern depicted in Figure 3, so that the hydraulic equalizing element is visible, replace the affected cylinder head using the repair kit listed below.
3. Replace the engine oil and oil filter cartridge.
Note:
^ For the following repair steps, the engine must be able to run in neutral on the hoist for an extended period of time, but it is not necessary to restore the vehicle to full driving conditions. Ensure engine and transmission are adequately supported.
4. Place vehicle on hoist, transmission in neutral, and ensure wheels are raised off the ground.
Note:
^ Ensure adequate ventilation to engine and unrestricted airflow to coolant radiator.
5. Start the engine and run engine in neutral at approximately 2000 RPM for 10 minutes to allow the engine to circulate the fresh engine oil.
Warning:
Do not leave engine running unattended.
6. After 10 minutes, return to idle and turn the engine off.
7. Replace the engine oil and oil filter cartridge again before returning the vehicle to the customer.
