Removing
- Read battery CAUTION! note
- Note or obtain radio code on vehicles with coded radio.
- Disconnect battery ground strap with the ignition switched off.
- Remove engine cover (arrows).
- Fit support bar 10-222 A with supports 10-222 A/1
- Tighten engine slightly using the spindles.
All models:
- Detach noise insulation -arrows-.
- Remove bracket for noise insulation -arrow-.
- Remove bolts -arrows- and detach covers -1- and -2-.
- Remove tunnel cross member -1- -arrows-.
- Remove bolts -arrow 1 - and -arrow 2- above the right drive shaft and remove heat shield.
- If installed, remove heat shield above the left drive shaft.
Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine:
- Remove front exhaust pipe -3- from clamp -2- on:
Vehicles with 6-cylinder engine:
- Remove front exhaust system with catalytic converter:
Continued for all models:
- Remove heat shield -4- above exhaust system.
- Remove the three lower engine and transmission connecting bolts arrow-.
- Remove the drive shafts -1- from the flange shafts and tie these up.
Note: Do not damage protective coating on drive shafts.
- Support transmission with engine and transmission lifter VAG 1383 A.
- Remove bolts -2- and then bolts -3- on tunnel cross member.
- Remove the two nuts -4- and detach tunnel cross member -2-.
- Lower engine and transmission lifter VAG 1383 A and place to one side.
- Remove selector rod -arrow A-.
- Remove hex socket-head bolt on push rod -arrow B-.
- Disconnect connector off speedometer sensor -arrow A-.
- Disconnect connector on reversing light switch (multi-function sensor) arrow B-.
- Disconnect all other electrical connections and ground wires from transmission and from the engine and transmission securing bolts.
- If installed, remove engine speed (RPM) sensor -G28- on left of transmission -arrow- and lay to one side.
- Remove starter from engine and transmission and secure.
Note: Do not disconnect starter cables.
- Remove lower engine and transmission connecting bolts, except for bolts -arrow A- and -arrow B-.
- Set the transmission support 3282 for removing the manual 012 with adjustment plate 3282/10 and attach to transmission lifter VAG 1383 A.

Notes:
^ Support elements -A- are shown in schematic form, arrow -B- points in direction of travel.
^ Adjustment plate 3282110 only fits in one position.
- Place transmission lifter under vehicle. Arrow -B- ) on adjustment plate points in direction of travel.
- Align adjustment plate parallel to transmission and lock safety support -arrow- on transmission.
- Remove engine and transmission connecting bolts (arrows -A- and -B-)
- Push transmission off dowel sleeves and lower carefully with transmission lifter VAG 1383 A just far enough to access the slave cylinder.
Note: When lowering transmission make sure hydraulic fine and hose to slave cylinder is not damaged.
- Remove clutch slave cylinder (arrow) and secure with wire, do not disconnect lines.
Note: Do not depress clutch pedal after removing slave cylinder.
- Lower transmission.
Note: When lowering transmission make sure there is sufficient clearance for drive shafts.
Secure transmission to repair stand with transmission support VW 353 and retaining plate VW 309 to carry out repairs.
- If the transmission is exchanged, the transmission mount must be transferred to the exchange transmission.
