Fluid - CVT: Service and Repair
Special tools and workshop equipment required
CVT 01J
- VAS 5051 with VAS 5051/1
- ATF filling device for CVT-transmission VAS 5162
- Drip tray
- Protective goggles
ATF level, checking
CAUTION! The Multitronic 01J transmission needs a different ATF to that used in multi-step automatic transmissions. Only the ATF, which is available as a replacement part, and specifically intended for the CVT transmission should be used in the planetary transmission.
Notes:
- The top left illustration on the reservoir of the filling device VAS 5162 indicates that only special ATF can be used for the CVT transmission.
- The other illustrations show how to fill the transmission. The necessary steps are described.
CAUTION!
^ The engine must not be started if there is only very riffle or no ATF in the transmission, e.g. following repair work or if a large amount of ATF has been discharged.
^ If this is the case, the transmission must first be filled with 4.5 to 5 liters of ATF.
Test requirements:
- Transmission must not be in emergency running mode.
- Vehicle must be on a flat surface.
- Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 must be connected. Vehicle self-diagnosis and vehicle system "02. Transmission electronics" must be selected.
- Engine must be idling.
- Air conditioner and heater must be switched off.
- When testing is started, ATF temperature must not be higher than 30° C. If necessary, allow transmission to cool down first.
Notes:
^ The ATF level changes as the ATF temperature in crease side creases.
^ Checking the ATF level when the ATF temperature is too low will result in overfilling.
^ Checking the ATF level when the ATF temperature is too high will result in under filling.
^ Both overfilling and under filling will prevent the transmission from functioning correctly.
^ The ATF temperature is read off at the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
Reading off ATF temperature
- Indicated on VAS 5051:
- In list -1-, touch diagnostic function "08 -Reading measured value block".
- Indicated on VAS 5051:
1. Enter display group. Max. input value = 255
- Use keypad-2- to enter "010" for "Display group number 010" and confirm by touching Q key.
- Indicated on VAS 5051:
- Read off ATF temperature in display zone -3-.
- Check ATF level, as soon as a temperature of 30° C is displayed.
Checking ATF level
Test requirements:
- Engine must be idling.
- Vehicle must be on a flat surface.
- Shift through all selector lever positions (P. R. N. D) with depressed brake pedal and let each position switch at idle engine speed for approximately 2 seconds.
- Raise vehicle.
- Loosen mounting parts -3- and -4- and remove rear part of noise insulation.
- Place container beneath transmission.
WARNING! Wear safety goggles.
- Once an ATF temperature of 35° C is reached, remove ATF check plug -B-.
Notes: When opening the plug, approximately 5 cl ATF flows out first from the inner oil level pipe.
The ATF level is correct if, at an ATF temperature of between 35° and 45° C 1), a small amount of fluid is still discharged at the ATF inspection plug (owing to the rise in fluid level caused by increased temperature).
1) For hot countries 50° C
- Replace ATF check plug.
- Tightening torque: 20 Nm
Note: ATF check plug must be closed again by 45° C 1) at the latest.
1) For hot countries 50° C
Add ATF if no ATF has exited from the ATF check plug hole by 40° C.
Requirement:
- Engine continues to run in idle.
- Attach full reservoir of ATF filling device VAS 5162 as high as possible on vehicle.
Note: The tap on the filing device VAS 5162 must be closed.
- Screw fitting on tap of filling device VAS 5162 into opening of ATF inspection plug -B-.
- Turn tap toward filling hose -bottom arrow-. ATF runs into transmission.
- Hold suitable container under outlet of filling device.
- Check ATF level by turning tap toward outlet-bottom arrow-.
ATF level is correct if only a small amount of ATF drips out of outlet before 45° C is reached.
Note: approximately 5 cl of ATF from the inner oil level pipe is always discharged initially.
- If no further ATF is discharged, turn tap back toward filling hose and pour in more ATF; check ATF level again.
- Remove tap when correct ATF level has been reached.
Note: A few drops of ATF will be discharged when the tap is removed.
- Replace ATF check plug.
- ATF check plug -B- must be closed again by 45° C 1) at the latest.
- Tightening torque: 20 Nm
Note: If the ATF temperature exceeds 45° C, too much ATF will be discharged as a result of the rise in temperature and the transmission will not be sufficiently filled!
1) For hot countries 50° C
- Quit "08- Reading measured value block" function by touching Mickey.
- Select "06- End Output".
- Switch off ignition and disconnect diagnostic cable.
ATF, changing and topping up after repair work
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Socket attachment 3357

Sequence of operations
CAUTION! Do not run the engine or tow the vehicle without adequate ATF.
Note: Observe disposal regulations.
- Attach full reservoir of ATF filling device VAS 5162 as high as possible on vehicle.
Note: The tap on the filing device VAS 5162 must be closed.
- Raise vehicle.

- Place drip tray under transmission.
- Unscrew ATF drain plug -A- using socket attachment 3357 and drain off ATF.
- Tighten ATF drain plug to 24 Nm.
